`VN-suru` type ergative verbs can be used in the same form in both an intransitive and transitive manner, but whether causative alternation occurs depends on the co-occurring noun phrase. Previous research has shown that causative alternation can occur in ergative verbs derived from transitive verbs when they are used in an anticausative manner, and in ergative verbs derived from intransitive verbs by virtue of their reflexivity. However, there are examples where causative alternation occurs without anti-causativization and reflexivity, and in cases where differences in the conditions for causative alternation cannot be recognized due to the direction of derivation. This paper sets its sights on a superordinate concept that both anti-causativization and reflexivity both exhibit transitivity, and involves corpus analysis performed based on Jacobsen`s (1989) transitive prototypes. As a result, it was found that causative alternation in ergative verbs does not depend on the direction of derivation of the verb. Instead, causative alternation was found to be possible in two cases: 1) In transitive sentences with no volitionality, and 2) In cases where volitionality is present, but it is known that the object will not undergo any changes or that it will be hard for the object to undergo any changes, due to encyclopedic knowledge.
