Entering the media revolution age, the novel status represented as the character text is being weakened; on the contrary, the power of images is being strong. Films and dramas based on literary works are produced, and films gaining popularity also reborn as the character text. Many in this image age face literature through images before reading literary works. Research and education of literature have to consider these consumer characteristics and cultural environment. They have to develop research and class models different from the ones until now. This study investigated as follows regarding correlation between literature and films, based on literary works, as a part of breakthroughs: First, this study introduced how the films that had originals, in other words, films based on literary works such as novels or plays ― so-called `literary films` ― were produced after the end of the 19th century, in consideration of Japanese film and literature history. Next, this study introduced briefly the content of representative research books and basic books necessary for research, to find out research circumstances in Japan about correlation between novels and films. Targeting theses in journals of Japanese language and literature-related societies or research institutes, this study divided domestic research circumstances into 3 domains ― `studies on film history and writers`, `studies on premodern materials` and `studies on modern and contemporary materials` ― and took a general view of the content and characteristics. For want of space, this study targeted only theses in journals of Japanese language and literature-related societies and research institutes; the research of theses introduced in journals of other academic fields will be dealt in the follow-up studies.
