Kaoru, the main character of "Sugar Time", is a 4th grade college student, living alone near Tokyo far from her hometown. She is portrayed as a person who lives in an ordinary life with family members, best friends and a graduate student lover.
The story is developed from an abnormality in appetite of Kaoru, but she starts to write down an abnormal diary in order to measure the amount of eating. Kaoru hides that fact also in her lover Yoshida and she doesn`t talk to no one even her family. Whenever she meets Yoshida, she secretly licks a candy so that it will not be noticed her appetite. Meanwhile, Yoshida makes another lover, and unilaterally says goodbye by letter. But Kaoru tells herself that everything is okay and take an attitude not to spare those things to be lost around.
However, Kaoru does not accept sorrow and loneliness, but hides the injured heart. In other words, she has lied for a long time. She did not eat real things, but she pretended to eat and only left a record. It is a proof that the weight has not increased by 1 gram. In order to maintain the lies so far and create new lies, she has prepared a space called Sunshine Market and hide unfulfilled desires with lies.
The appetite comes to an end and she feels full stomach for the first time in a while. Because she confesses what she has been falsifying so far and accepts emotions that are going to be lost. It shows the unstable aspect of youth as abnormality of appetite. Actually, refusal of food is superficial expression and we can understand as a story of a liar of a young woman who does not want to dew inside the conflict and its confession.
