이 글은 중의성과 모호성의 언어적 가치를 살펴보고 중의적 표현과 모호한 표현에 대한 바람직한 교육 방향을 제안하는 데 목적이 있다. 중의성과 모호성은 언어 세계에 개인과 사회의 인식이 반영되어 발생하는 자연스러운 현상으로, 이를 언어의 특성으로 교육해야 한다. 언어 상황에서 의도적으로 중의적이고 모호한 표현을 사용하는 것이 유리한 경우는 수수께끼나 유머 등의 언어유희, 광고 텍스트 등 주의 주목 효과를 줄 때, 청자나 제3자를 배려할 때 등이다. 중의성과 모호성을 해소하여야 할 상황은 주로 의미의 구체성이 결여된 표현을 사용하여 의사소통을 방해할 때 발생하는데, 이러한 경우에는 어휘적 중의성, 구조적 중의성, 화용적 중의성을 구분하여 교육하는 것이 유리하다. 국어교육에서 우선적으로 언어 특성으로서 중의성과 모호성을 인식하여야 한다. 이에 따라 중의적이고 모호한 표현을 해소하는 교육과 의도적으로 이를 활용하는 교육이 균형을 이룰 때 실제적인 국어교육을 구현할 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a desirable educational direc-tion for ambiguous expressions and vague expressions. The ambiguity and vagueness in the language is a natural phenom-enon that occurs due to the recognition of individual and society in the language world. Therefore it should be taught as part of nature of language. It is advantageous to intentionally use ambiguous and vague ex-pressions in the following cases: calembour such as mystery and humor-ous text, attention effect on advertisement text, and strategies to care for listeners. The ambiguity and vagueness of the meaning must be resolved when it interferes with communication using expressions lacking speci-ficity. In this case, it is desirable to distinguish the lexical ambiguity, struc-tural ambiguity, and pragmatic ambiguity. We must first recognize ambiguity and vagueness as nature of language in Korean education. Then there is a balance between education to resolve them and education to use them with a purpose.
