이 논문은 유배가사의 효시로 알려진 매계(梅漢) 조위(書傳)의 <만분가〉에 나타난 심리를 체계적으로 이해하는 것을 목표로 한다. 조위는 이 작품을 통해 자신의 극적인 삶과 비통한 마음을 가감 없이 드러내면서 작품의 제목에 `만분(萬聞`이라는 예사롭지 않은 표현을 노출하고 있다. 그러나 이제까지의 연구에서 이 작품에 나타나는 화자의 심리적 흐름이 충분히 밝혀 지지는 않은 상태이다. 이 작품은 매우 극적인 삶을 살았던 한 사대부가 삶에 대한 희망을 더 이상 유지하기 어려운 비극적인 국면에서 탄생하였다. 작자는 수많은 전고를 활용하면서 자신이 겪고 있는 고통과 세계에 대한 인식을 관념적으로 펼쳐 내고 있다. 이에 본고는 우선 작품 전편에 흐르는 의식의 패턴을 찾아 이 작품이 작자에게 어떤 의미를 지닌 것이었는지를 알아보았다. 본고를 통해 확인해 본 바, 이 작품에서는 자기 자신에 대한 연민, 연군 의 정, 운명에 대한 회의가 반복되고 있으며, 이 과정에서 인식을 변화시켜 가는 모습이 나타난다. <만분가〉의 핵심은 임으로부터의 자발적 단절과 자기 이해의 도모에 있는 것으로 볼 수 있다 이런 면에서 이 작품은 이후의 유배가사에 형식적, 내용적 영향을 미치고 있으면서도 임금 및 삶에 대한 인식의 측면에서 독자적인 세계를 구축하고 있다.

This thesis aims to understand the mentality of Jo Wi, the author of < Manbunga[萬憤歌] >, who was a victim of the massacre of scholars and died in exile. < Manbunga > was the result of this experience. In < Manbunga >, he describes his pain and his view of the world through various historical events and Chinese characters. Therefore, careful reading is needed to appreciate his work. In conclusion, I found that his thought is composed of three elements: the author himself, yearning for the king, and fate. The meaning of the three elements changes gradually, and the crucial feature of this work is that the speaker tries to separate himself from the monarch. In this respect, this work creates an unusual feature of exiled scholar-gentry.
