이 글은 2015~2016년에 발생한 페미니즘 도서 베스트셀러화의 주된 양상과 그 사회 · 정치적 맥락을 분석했다. 20~30대 젊은 여성들을 중심으로 한 페미니즘 독서문화의 형성은 한국사회의 여성차별을 타파하기 위한 운동의 전개와 맞물려 있다. 일상에서, 노동의 현장에서, 대중문화에서, 정치의 장에서 차별과 혐오의 대상이 되어 왔던 여성들은 끊임없이 제기되고 있는 페미니즘 이슈들에 응답하면서 스스로를 페미니스트로 정체화하기 시작했다. 이를 상징적으로 보여주는 사건이 바로 `#나는페미니스트입니다` 해시태그 운동이었다. 이러한 페미니스트로의 정체화는 출판 시장에서 `페미니스트 되기`의 중요성을 역설하는 에세이 모음집의 형태를 띤 입문서나 대중서의 인기로 나타났다. 또한 텀블벅과 같은 크라우드 펀딩의 방식으로 출간되는 페미니즘 도서들이 늘어나고 있다는 점은 대중문화와 인터넷 공간을 중심으로 성장한 새로운 페미니즘의 한 단면을 보여준다. 페미니즘 도서 베스트셀러화에서 나타나는 또 하나의 특징은 많은 책들이 `언어`의 문제에 천착하고 있다는 점이다. `강남역 살인 사건` 이후 연이어 나온 책들은 추모와 공감, 연대의 실천을 보여주었을 뿐만 아니라 사라지기 쉬운 여성의 목소리를 보존하는 중요한 역할의 매체가 되어 주었다. 한편 책에서 실질적으로 무기가 될 수 있는 말을 찾으려는 움직임들이 나타나기 시작했다. 이 글에서는 2015~2016년 페미니즘 도서의 베스트셀러화의 맥락과 핵심적 요소들을 재구성하려고 시도했다. 이 글에서 다루어지지 못한 페미니즘 도서의 다양한 `핑크 스펙트럼`에 대한 접근과 `독서 이후`에 대한 논의는 향후의 과제로 남긴다.

This essay analyzes social and political contexts surrounding the phenomenon of feminist books becoming bestsellers during 2015~2016. The formation of feminist reading culture, mostly made up of the young female generation in their 20s and 30s, intersects with the movement for eliminating the discrimination against women in Korea. Women who have been discriminated against as hated objects in their daily lives, working places, mass culture, and political society started to identify themselves as feminists while responding to ongoing current feminist issues. The hashtag movement, “#I_am_a_Feminist”, figuratively reveals this change. Identification as the feminist also occurred in the publishing market, where introductory essay books, strongly asserting the importance of “becoming feminists”, became popular. Furthermore, the increasing number of feminist books published by the crowd funding resources such as “tumblbug” shows one aspect of new feminism that has developed in the mass culture and on the Internet. Another feature of the feminist books bestseller phenomenon is that the number of books are inquiring into the problem of “language.” Books published after the incident of “a murder case in Kangnam station” not only showed the practice of remembrance, sympathy and solidarity, but also became a significant medium for preserving female voices that likely to be fade away. Meanwhile, the books provided an activity for people to find practical words from books, which can be used as a weapon to fight against discrimination. This article tried to reconstruct the contexts and its essential elements related to the phenomenon of feminist books` popularity in 2015-2016. Other topics which are not mentioned in this article, such as the various “Pink spectrum” of feminist books and “changes occurring after reading”, are left for future research and will be discussed later.
