The purpose of this paper is to verify `devoicing of Japanese fricative at word-medial position`. Generally, Japanese voiced fricative /z/ at word-medial position is recognized `just voiced` by Japanese native speakers, and foreign Japanese learners. But from a phonetical point of view, some of Japanese voiced fricative /z/ is articulated as `devoicing` [zo]. But we have not verified this phenomenon with using acoustic method.
Thus this paper examined two acoustic experiments targeting two Japanese native speakers and three Korean Japanese learners. From this experiments, we determined `occurrence rate of devoicing`, and `devoicing ratio(Abdelli-Beruh, N.B. 2012)`. First, `occurrence rate of devoicing`, we could make clear the deference of Japanese native speakers and Korean native speakers. In case of Japanese native speakers, 43.7% of data were occurred devoicing. On the other hand, in case of Korean native speakers, 52.6% of data were occurred `devoicing`. Second, `devoicing raio`, in case of Japanese native speakers, we observed 21.7% of fricative duration is voiced. But in case of Korean native speakers, only 4.9% of fricative duration is voiced.
In conclusion, we verified `devoicing of voiced fricative at word-medial position` with using acoustic method empirically, and have to examine further experiment about hearing.
