이 논문은 주요한의 번역·번안 소설의 양상에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 주요한은 1918년부터 1941년까지 시와 소설 작품의 번역 및 번안소설을 발표하였다. 하지만 지금까지 문학사적 논의에서 제외되어 왔다. 특히 `낭림산인`이라는 필명으로 발표한 두 편의 번안 소설은 연구의 조명을 받지 못했다. 이에 주요한의 번안소설 「素服의 秘密」과 「沙漠의 □」을 통해 주요한의 외래 서사물 수용 방식을 추론해보고자 한다. 주요한은 원작을 소개하는 목적의 번역은 자신의 이름을, 원작을 재가공하는 번안에는 `낭림산인`이라는 필명을 사용함으로써 그 차이를 명확하게 구분 하였다. 주요한은 번역이 주체적 역량을 갖고 새로운 서사를 생산할 수 없었던 시기 우리 문학을 향상시키고 그 대안이 될 수 있다고 판단했다. 상대적으로 번안은 원작의 훼손을 전제하기 때문에 폄하되었다. 그러나 번안소설은 번역 서사를 보안하는 역할을 담당한다. 주요한이 원작을 재가공하는 방식을 통해 작가가 갖고 있었던 외래 서사의 수용 방식을 확인할 수 있기 때문이다.

This paper is a preliminary review for the study of Ju-han`s novels of translation and adaptation. Ju Yo-han wrote novels translated and/or adapted from works of poetry and novels from 1918 to 1941. But his works have been excluded from the discussion of literary history so far. In particular, the two adaptation novels published under the pseudonym `Nangrimsanin` were not well researched. Through Ju Yo-han`s adaptation novels, 「Women in White」 and 「The Valley of Silent Men」, this study attempts to infer Ju Yo-han`s styles of acceptance of foreign narratives. Ju Yo-han clearly distinguished the difference by using his own name for translation and using the pseudonym of Nangrimsanin for adaptation to rework the original. Ju Yo-han judged that translation could improve our literature and be an alternative when it could not produce a new narrative with a subjective capacity. Relatively adaptation was depreciated due to the presupposition that it may damage to the original. However, adaptation novels play a role in securing translation narratives. It is confirmed that Ju Yo-han can reproduce the way of accepting foreign narratives that the author had by reworking the original works.
