본 연구에서는 판소리를 제재로 한 그림책들을 대상으로 영역(英譯)양상을 살펴보았다. 영문 한국전래동화 그림책을 구입하는 독자들 가운데는 한국문화를 배우기 위한 사람들이 많은데, 판소리동화가 이런 목적에 가장 부합한다고 볼 수 있다. <흥부전> 9편, <토끼전> 2편, <심청전> 3편 등 모두 14편의 영문 판소리동화 그림책을 대상으로 연구한 결과 의외로 한국전래동화 그림책이 아닌, 19세기말에서 20세기초까지 출판된 영문 한국설화집의 영향을 받았음을 보았다. 게다가 한국문화에 대한 이해부족으로 초래된 오류들이 현재의 출판물에도 수용되어 있었다. 번역의 단계를 보면, 먼저 판소리의 특징을 살리고, 상상력을 자극하는 소재를 활용하여 어린이 독자에게 맞는 변개의 단계를 거쳤다. 다음으로 타문화권 독자를 위해 한국문화를 소개하는 개작을 거쳤는데, 어린이 독자들이 받아들일 수 있는 타문화는 지극히 제한적이므로, 문화요소의 내용 변용이 불가피했다. 이와 같은 단계들을 거쳐 영문 한국전래동화 그림책을 출판하는 데는, 한국문학 전문가, 아동문학 전문가, 영어번역 전문가들의 협업이 필요하다. 이는 개인의 힘이나 일개 출판사의 힘으로는 어렵기에, 국가차원의 다양한 방면의 지원이 필요할 것이다.

Many customers purchase English picture books of Korean folk tales to understand Korean culture. Picture books based on pansori novels can be considered the most fitting for this purpose. Therefore, this study focused on English picture books that retell the folk tales from Heungbu-jeon, Tokki-jeon, and Shimcheong-jeon. There are a total of 14 English picture books of Korean folk tales, namely 9 Heungbu-jeon, 2 Tokki-jeon, and 3 Shimcheong-jeon books, and the influence of the English versions of Korean folktale stories published from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century is still present. However, images such as Shimcheong wearing a white gat(traditional Korean hat) or Shimcheong wearing a necklace and fancy clothing before falling into the waters of the Indangsoo are reflections of distorted facts in currently published picture books. Distorted Korean culture, including excessive devotion to one`s parents, also remains in currently adapted books. The repetition of words and phrases and the rhythmic writing style make pansori novels suitable for child readers. In addition, humorous expressions and structures, such as those in which items in gourds can either repay a debt or exact revenge, are suitable for fairy tales. If an adaptation suitable for fairy tales retains the characteristics of pansori, it would lead to the publishing of an excellent English picture book of Korean folk tales.
