본 연구는 아시아 출신 여학생의 한국 유학 경험을 이해하는 것을 목적으로 참여자 7명을 대상으로 심층면접을 하고, 현상학적 방법으로 분석하였다. 참여자들은 한국어 능력시험을 요구받지 않고 장학금을 제공받아 한국으로 유학을 올 수 있었다. 참여자들은 한국 학생들과 교우관계를 맺지 못하였지만, 모국의 유학생과 종교인들로부터 심리적 지지를 받았다. 이들은 학위 취득에는 성공하였지만, 한국어가 능숙하지 않기 때문에 그리고 한국 또래와 가까운 관계를 맺을 자신이 없기 때문에 한국에서 그 다음 교육과정에 입학하거나 취업하기 어려울 것으로 평가하였다. 따라서 미국, 유럽, 그리고 모국으로 이주하여 한국에서 취득한 학위가 우대받을 수 있는 곳에 취업하기를 희망하였고, 궁극적으로는 모국으로 돌아가 모국 발전에 기여하기를 원했다. 본 연구의 결과는 아시아 출신 여자유학생이 한국 유학 경험에 부여하는 의미와, 이들의 관점에서 본 한국 대학 문화의 특성, 그리고 이들을 돕기 위한 상담 프로그램 제안을 중심으로 논의되었다.

This study explored foreign female college students` experiences in Korea. Seven female college students were interviewed and the interview data was analyzed by the phenomenological qualitative research method. Their motivations to study in Korea was to have a better opportunity for higher education without the financial burden and language requirements to study abroad. A few participants had close relationships with Korean students, but the others never had close relationships with Korean students. They received social and psychological support from protestant churches and colleagues from their native countries. Participants expected barriers as they continued their advanced level education and career in Korea because of their lack of Korean communication skills and difficulties with surviving in Korean culture. Some planed to go the U.S. or a Europe or to go back to their own countries to get a better job with a higher educational background in Korea. They ultimately want to go back to and to develop their home countries. The discussion addressed the meaning of participants` experiences, features of Korean college culture in their perspectives, and the role of university counseling centers as support systems for helping their adjustment in Korea.
