본 연구는 전통사회에서 현대사회에 이르기까지 혼외관계의 주된 주체였던 중년남성들의 혼외관계 경험에 대한 심리적 본질과 경험적 구조를 파악하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 지금 현재 혼외관계를 경험하고 있거나 종료한 지 2년 이내인 부산·경남에 거주하고 있는 4, 50대 중년남성 8명을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였다. 수집된 자료는 현상학적 연구방법을 통해 경험의 공통된 의미단위를 기초로 하여 7개의 구성요소와 29개의 하위 구성요소로 도출하였다. 본 연구에서 중년남성들의 진술을 통해 공통적으로 나타난 심리적 현상은 존중받고 싶은 욕구의 추구로 나타났다. 중년남성들의 존중에의 욕구는 성장과정과 결혼생활 그리고 혼외관계라는 시간적 구조 속에서 좌절된 경험의 반복에도 불구하고 포기되지 않았으며 가정유지의 의지와 함께 지속되는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 의의는 중년남성의 혼외관계 경험의 심리적 본질과 경험적 구조를 논의하였으며 오늘날의 결혼과 가정의 지향점에 시사점을 제공하였다는데 있다. 또한 혼외관계와 관련한 상담개입에 있어서의 방안과 후속연구에 대한 제언을 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 상담현장에서 혼외관계로 위기를 겪고 있는 가정의 상담자들에게 현상의 이해를 돕는데 중요한 자료가 될 것이며 국가와 사회의 근간이 되는 결혼과 가정에 대한 교육적·제도적 지원 방향에 시사점을 제공한다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the psychological nature and the empirical structure of extramarital relations experience that the middle aged males who have been the active subject of the extramarital relations from the traditional societies to the modern societies. To perform this study, in-depth interviews with 8 people aged men from the 40s to 50s living in Busan and Gyeongnam areas and who are currently experiencing the extramarital relations or who finished the extramarital relations in 2 years have been conducted. The collected data have been classified as 7 components and 29 sub-components on the basis of the common meaning unit of the experiences through phenomenological methods. The common psychological phenomena that have been shown in this study through the statement of the middle-aged men are the desire to be respected. The desire to be respected that the middle-aged men have is showing that it has been continued with the will of maintaining their families in spite of the repetition on the frustrated experiences in the temporal structure in the growth process, marriage life and extramarital relations. The significance of this study is to discuss the psychological nature and the empirical structure in the experiences of the extramarital relations from the middle-aged man, and to provide the implication of the directing point in the aspect of the marriage and the family nowadays. In addition, the plans regarding the advice related with the extramarital relations and the necessity of the follow-up studies have been suggested. The result of this study will be the important data to help the middle-aged men experiencing the crisis by the extramarital relations in advising in the field and to provide the implication for the direction of the educational and institutional supports for the marriages and the families that has been the foundation of the nation and the society.
