이 연구는 재외동포를 대상으로 한 다양한 분야의 연구 가운데 한국어 문제에 초점을 맞춰 한국어교육과 관련되어 이루어진 연구의 성과와 한계를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 재외동포에 대한 연구는 2000년대 이후로 급격하게 증가하고 있으며, 특히 언어 문제에 대한 연구자들의 관심이 한국어교육과 관련하여 다양한 연구 성과물로 나타나고 있다. 이러한 연구의 성과는 재외동포의 언어 사용 문제에 있어 한국어교육의 중요성을 증명해 주는 결과이기도 하다. 본고는 재외동포를 대상으로 한 한국어 사용과 관련된 선행 연구를 귀납적으로 수집하여, 먼저 시기, 지역, 주제별로 분석하였다. 수집된 자료는 총 345편이며, 1972년부터 연구가 수행되었으나 연구의 절반이 2010년 이후에 이루어졌다. 귀납적인 연구 주제를 범주화하여 재외동포의 한국어교육, 재외동포 한국어 관련 언어 정책, 언어 정체성과 언어 발달, 한국어 사용 실태에 관련된 연구 총 4가지 범주로 나누어 살펴보았다. 각 범주는 다시 세부 주제에 따라 2개에서 8개 하위 범주로 나누었다. 이를 통해 현재 연구의 경향을 파악하고, 향후 연구의 방향성을 제시할 수 있었다.

Research about the overseas Koreans has been rapidly increased since 2000, especially in the academic area of Korean language and related field of Korean language education. The study aims to explore the achievement and limitation of research about overseas Koreans. The data was collected from the related previous studies and analyzed by time, region, and research topics. The total number of studies is 345, conducted from 1980 to now, and almost half of studies has been published after 2010. Research topics are divided into four categories; teaching and learning Korean, policy of overseas Koreans, language identity and development, and the actual condition of language use. Each category are also divided into 2 to 8 subcategories depend on detailed topics. This study investigates the current research trends to review the achievement and to present the direction of future research. The study suggests that future research should be conducted focusing on uncovered resigns of current research and having a theoretical background to develop the overseas Korean research qualitatively.
