This study aims to examine a character `Yuk Chwi Ok`, who both causes conflicts and inspires life into the story, appearing consistently in the series of Hyeonssiyangungssangringi. Yuk Chwi Ok grows from a 14-year-old girl to a mother, and finally to a grandmother. It is rare for the whole life story of a peripheral female character to be shown concretely in a Korean classical long novel. Her life is represented through her appetite, sexual desire, and material desire, while such desires result from her status as a `marginal man`. Yuk Chwi Ok functions as the other who discloses the light and shadow of the family. Her noticeable dullness makes other family members stand out, while the attitudes of the inside men toward her accuse the hypocrisy of the family. Also, Yuk Chwi Ok brings about conflicts and, at the same time, acts as an intermediary in growing up related characters through the conflicts. One of the reasons that the series of Hyeonssiyangungssangringi could continue is the character Yuk Chwi Ok. She captures readers` attention by causing laughs through her comic behaviors. She is standing in the middle of character variations by giving and taking distinct personalities with various characters in the series. Yuk Chwi Ok significantly contributes to obtaining the ordinariness and the reality of the Hyeonssiyangungssangringi series.
