조선후기 세태소설은 남성 사대부의 위선적 행동에 대한 풍자를 `훼절(毁節)`이란 방식을 통해 드러낸 일군의 작품 유형을 가리킨다. 이들 작품은 주로 18~9세기에 창작되어 당대 사회의 지배계급인 사대부의 위선을 비판, 풍자화한 것으로 민중적 시각이 적극 반영된 텍스트로 소설사에서 주목되었다. 본고는 <지봉전>의 성격에 대해 기존의 시각에서 벗어나 새로운 측면에서 접근해 보고자 하였다. <지봉전>은 그동안 19세기 세태소설의 자장 안에서 논의되어 왔다. <지봉전>은 훼절을 서사의 중요한 모티프로 활용하고 있는 점에서 기존 세태소설 작품들과 공통점을 가진다. 하지만 남성 사대부의 위선을 고발하거나 징치하는데 우선의 목적이 있지 않으며, 작중에서 훼절 대상인 `이수광`의 경우 한번도 다른 사람에게 놀림감의 대상으로 형상화되지 않은 점에서 기존 세태소설과는 결을 달리하는 지점이 존재한다. <지봉전>은 기존 세태소설에서 보이는 내기와 공모의 구조와는 달리 윤리적 이성과 현실적 욕망 사이의 간극에서 현실적 욕망이 긍정될 수 있다는 점을 강조하고 있다. 아울러 <지봉전>의 성격 또한 <운영전>을 연상시키는 작품 서두, 세태소설의 `훼절`모티프, 다양한 전고의 활용, 서술자의 개입 등의 방식을 통해 혼성모방이 작품 속에 활용된 것으로 파악하였다. 이는 당대에 유행하던 대표적 장르소설의 장점을 두루 끌어온 작품으로 <지봉전>을 해석할 수 있음을 의미하는 것이다.
본고의 논의는 일종의 시론적 성격이 강한 관계로 추후 좀 더 정치하게 논의를 가다듬을 필요가 있다. 일단 본고를 통해 <지봉전>에 대한 시각의 전환을 환기시키는 것에 의미를 두고자 한다.
Post Cho-Sun novel of manners are the novels which developed the method to satirize the hypocritical behaviors of male Sa-Dae-Bu by forgoing one`s integrity called `forgoing her`s integrity`. These literary works are published between 18th and 19th centuries and they attracted novel society`s attention due to its contents which actively reflected the public`s point of view, satirized and criticized the hypocricy of Sa-Dae-Bu which is the ruling class at then.
This paper intends to stay away from the existing point of view and develop a new perspective on the characteristics of < Ji-Bong-Jeon >. < Ji-Bong-Jeon > has been discussed within the boundaries of manners novel in 19th centuries. < Ji-Bong-Jeon > has the common ground with the existing novel of manners that they both consider `forgoing her`s integrity` as an important description motif.
However, there is differences between them that < Ji-Bong-Jeon > does not have a part reporting or disciplining the hypocrisies of `male Sa-Dae-Bu` and `Lee Su Gwang`, the object of `forgoing her`s integrity`, has never been objectified or satirized by others at once as well.
< Ji-Bong-Jeon > emphasizes the fact that `realistic desires` could be positively acknowledged in between the extreme ends of `ethical rationality` and `realistic desires` which differs from the novel of manners` bet and conspiracy structures.
As a result, it seems that the mixed imitation is used in the novel through the introduction which reminds of < Wun-Young-Jeon >, `forgoing her`s integrity` motif of the manners novel, utilizing various `authentic precedent` and author`s intervention. This means that < Ji-Bong-Jeon > could be interpreted as a piece which embraced the overall advantages of then-popular genre novels.
This paper needs more delicately constructed research on the topic in the future because it has introductory characteristics. This paper emphasizes the new perspective on the < Ji-Bong-Jeon >.
