이 글의 목적은 『사씨남정기』의 창작 동기를 밝히는 데 있다. 특히 본고는 `사씨가 며느리 훈육을 목적으로 썼다는 가상(假想)의 책인『여훈』은 어떤 내용일까?` 하는 의문으로부터 시작하여 소설 안에서 그 해답의 열쇠를 찾고자 했다. 『사씨남정기』가 『내훈』이 말하고자 하는 바, 유교적 가부장제를 드러내기 위해 지어졌을 것이라는 본고의 추론은, 먼저 두 작품의 긴밀한 관련성에서 그 증거를 찾을 수 있다. 서와 발문을 비롯하여 7장에 걸친 『내훈』의 내용이 골고루 『사씨남정기』 속에 녹아 있음은 부정할 수 없는 사실이다. 그리고 『내훈』의 내용이 집약적으로 내면화되고 형상화 된 사씨라는 인물에서도 그 이유를 찾을 수 있다. 사씨는 내훈의 화신이자 모범이라고 할 수 있는 인물이다. 결론적으로 『사씨남정기』는 『내훈』의 소설 판이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 『내훈』이 가부장적 질서에 복무할 수 있는 여성상을 교육을 통해 강화하는 직접적인 방식이라면, 『사씨남정기』는 문학적인 장치를 통한 간접적 방식이라고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this article is to explore the author`s intention of writing Sassinamjeonggi(謝氏南征記). This study has its starting point at the question, `It is said that Mrs. Sa wrote Yeohun to educate her daughters-in-law. What is this book about?` and I have tried to find out the key to answering that question within the novel Sassinamjeonggi. The evidence supporting the inference that Sassinamjeonggi was written to reveal what Naehun had tried to say can be found in the close relation between these two works. It is an undeniable fact that the content of Naehun, including its preface and epilogue, is embedded throughout the novel Sassinamjeonggi. Furthermore, the inference can also be drawn from the main character, Mrs. Sa, in whom the content of the book Naehun is intensively internalized. This image had been valid for women of all ranks, from noble ones to one at lower social ranks. Mrs. Sa herself makes an excellent model for this character. Consequently, it can be inferred that Sassinamjeonggi is a novel version of Naehun. Sassinamjeonggi uses an indirect literary device to let women realize the needs and destiny of themselves.
