이 논문은 표암 강세황(1713~1791)의 국내 진경 체험 후 그린 그림과 기행문의 특징 및 존재가치를 논한 것이다. 일찍이 예원의 총수로 일컬어진 강세황은 18세기 전반을 포괄하는 화가이자 문인으로 명성이 높다. 그런데 그가 남긴 많은 작품 가운데에서도 실제 경관 체험을 근거로 하는 그림과 기행문은 제작 시기와 작품의 성격에서 특이점을 보인다. 우선 관념 산수화와 달리, 실제 체험을 반영한 그림은 40대 중반 이후 탄생하여 70대까지 인생의 완숙기에 창작된 것이다. 기행문은 바로 이 작품들과 동반관계에 있는 것으로, 둘째 아들 강완의 부임지인 부안을 방문했던 경험을 반영한 <우금암도>과 <유격포기>, <유우금암기> 그리고 장남 강인을 방문한 후 남인 <풍악장유첩>과 <유금강산기> <중구일등의관령소기>를 주요 작품으로 손꼽아볼 수 있다. 이들 작품을 구성과 표현을 중심으로 살펴본 결과, 그림은 인상적인 장면을 그리는 과정에서 동일 작가로서의 공통된 화풍이나 특성을 반영하기보다 상황에 다른 가변적인 양상을 드러낸 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편 기행문의 경우는 그림과의 친밀도가 각기 다르기는 하지만, 분리된 작품이 세부일정을 꼼꼼하게 반영하면서 그림에서 모두 담아낼 수 없는 노정을 잘 보여주는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 그런 가운데에서도 이들 문학작품은 철저히 현장 중심의 시각적 정보에 집중하며 감각적 묘사를 통해 왜곡 없는 현장감을 전달하는 것을 장점으로 손꼽을 수 있었다. 이와 같은 특징을 지니는 기행 체험의 작품들은 그림과 문학이라는 서로 다른 장르의 공존 속에서 그 존재 가치를 공고히 하고 있는 것인데, 궁극적으로 단순한 실상의 기록에 그치는 것이 아니라 지극히 개인적인 비망록이자 예술적 해방구로 자리매김함으로써 여타의 18세기 진경문화와는 다른 독자적인 개성을 구가하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

This paper is about Kang Se-hwang(1713~1791)`s pictures and travel essays, which based on his special trip. Kang is a famous literary painter who was called the head of art and literature in 18 century. Among his lots of works, the landscape paintings and the literatures related to true-view landscape show us some specialty. Most of all, relevant works are created later in Kang`s life when he indulged his passion for art. During that time, Kang visited Buan and Hoeyang(Mt. Geumgang) where his two sons worked as government officer respectively and the experience of these space leaded to several pictures and travel essays at the same time. At the result of searching for those works especially about its composition and expression, I found out that the pictures reveal various forms instead of reflecting common style or distinction. On the other hand, the literatures which contain meticulous itinerary focus on visual information without distortion of real landscape. And thanks to the coexistence of the pictures and literatures even thought their difference, Kang`s true view landscape arts could raise its peculiar meaning as personal memorandum and artificial haven among famous 18 century landscape culture.
