이 글은 정인섭의 어린이 운동사적 삶과 연관하여 창작 아동극 세계를 구체적으로 접근하기 위해 그의 아동극 활동과 창작 아동극의 특성에 주목하였다. 정인섭의 `어린이문화운동`의 시작은 1924년 5월 `색동회`에 가입하면서부터 『어린이』 잡지에 1926년부터 1930년까지 각색동화극과 창작 아동극을 발표하면서 본격적으로 뛰어 들었다. 방정환 사망이후, `녹양회`를 통해 활동하던 정인섭은 아동극에 대한 확대 연령에 맞는 아동극에 대한 실천을 꾀했다. 정인섭의 아동극 활동은 어린이문화운동의 `어린이 사랑`이라는 신념아래 나라잃은시기부터 자신의 마지막 생애를 다할 때까지 순수한 어린이 세계를 담은 어린이 문화예술에 공헌했다. 정인섭의 창작 아동극의 특성은 첫째, 어린이들의 정서적 안정을 꾀하는 동시에 생활 속에서 실천할 수 있는 교훈을 전달하고 있다. 둘째, 어린이의 생활상을 담기 위해서 주변의 친근한 소재와 인물을 이끌면서 극의 집중도를 높였다. 셋째, 창작 아동극의 공연성을 극대화하기 위해 노래, 무대 배경과 환경, 배역, 의상, 조명, 소품의 요소를 조화롭게 배치하였다. 정인섭의 어린이문화운동과 창작 아동극 활동은 우리의 초창기 아동문학과 맥을 같이 하며 우리 아동극의 기반을 형성했다. 앞으로 본 연구를 토대로 정인섭의 아동극과 극평을 비롯한 아동문학에 대한 논의가 이어지기를 바란다.
