최근 들어 지방자치단체들이 시 승격을 기념하거나 연말연시의 타종을 위해 대종(大鐘) 제작이 붐을 이루고 있다. 이에 본 논문은 지방자치단체의 대종에 나타난 문양을 분석하고 향후 자치단체의 대종제작의 문양과 관련된 정보를 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다. 자치단체들의 종의 규모는 대형화되고 있으며 이를 통해 나름대로의 세(勢:힘)를 과시하는데 “광주 시민의 종”이 8,150관이며 “경북대종”은 7,700관으로 그 규모가 크기 때문에 장관을 이룬다. 대형화 추세에 맞추어 진해시에서도 “진해시민대종”이 제작되었는데 진해는 역사적인 군항도시로써 전국적으로 이름난 “군항제”가 매년 열리는 아름다운 벚꽃도시다. 진해시에서는 시청사 이전 및 시 승격 50주년을 기념하기 위해 2005년말“진해시민대종”을 제작하였다. 이 종의 형태, 규모, 구성요소를 알아보고 특히 표면문양디자인에 있어서의 디자인개발에 중점을 두고 연구하였다. 대종은 용뉴, 음통, 상대, 하대, 유곽, 유두, 비천, 당좌 등으로 분류하는데 이러한 구성요소들의 표면디자인은 종소리와 더불어 종의 가치를 나타내는 중요한 요소이다. 진해시의 “진해시민대종”제작에서 몇 가지 중요한 디자인 표현에 관해 분석해 보기로 한다. 용뉴, 음통 등은 기존의 대종과 동일하게 제작되었으나 나머지 요소는 진해시의 특징을 최대한 살리려는 디자인으로 평가 받고 있다. 상대는 구름과 백구를 교차시켜 배치했는데, 백구는 진해시의 시조로서 날아다니는 힘이 강하고 물고기를 잘 잡는 새인데 시민의 강하고 부지런한 정서와 잘 어울리는 새이다. 유곽은 상대 하단에 있는 네모난 태 부분을 말하는데 진해시의 시목인 편백의 나무형상을 상징화하였으며 틀 안에 있는 문양인 편백의 잎은 단순하게 나타내었다 . 유두는 젖꼭지 모양으로 벚꽃을 표현하였다. 비천상은 천사가 하늘을 향해 날아가는 모습을 한다고 해서 붙여진 이름인데 “진해시민대종”에서는 시화인 벚꽃과 시조인 백구, 그리고 해와 구름을 주로 표현하였다.벚꽃은 가지의 형태를 “5”자로 표현하여 해의 “0”과 합해 “50”이란 숫자를 나타내고 있다. 이는 진해시 시 승격 50주년을 뜻하는 것이다. 또한 비천상 한 부분에 시조인 백구 5마리가 짝을 지어 비상하고 있는데 이는 시민들이 힘을 합해 한 방향으로 나아가자는 의미를 담고 있다. 당좌는 종을 치는 당목이 닿는 부분인데 주로 원형의 틀을 이루고 있다. 진해대종에서도 원형의 틀을 그대로 살린 벚꽃을 디자인하였다. 하대는 종의 하단에 있는 띠로서 굵은 선과 문양으로 이루어져 있는데 이는 종의 파손과 소리의 울림, 질을 높이기 위한 것이다. 여기에 벚꽃과 거북선을 표현하여 진해의 이미지를 강조했다, 이러한 내용들을 중심으로 제작한 “진해시민대종”은 향후 지방자치단체의 대종제작에 많은 자료제공이 될 것으로 믿는다 . 특히 지금은 분업화, 전문화 시대임을 비추어 볼 때 대종디자인에 대한 자료개발이 급선무이고, 대종전문디자이너 부재로 인한 문양디자인 개발부실에 따른 디자이너 발굴 또한 시급한 과제라고 생각된다.

The appearance design is an important element which indicate the value with the sound of a bell. Let`s analyze about several expression at work on “a large bell of the people in Jin-hae”. Like Yongnyu, Eumtong(a part making a sound on the top of a bell) is produced like existing one equally, but other factors is evaluated design that is characteristic of that city. Sangdae(a belt on the upper end of a bell) cross-arranged a cloud and Baek-gu. Baek-gu(a gull) is the city bird in Jin-hae, and strong as well as catch a fish. Also, this symbolize power and diligent feelings of citizen. Yu-gwak(a frame under Sangdae) express a shape and a figure in a frame simplified a leaf of the cypress tree(City Tree). Yu-dufnipplelike on tap in Yu-gwak) is simplification nipplelike a cherry blossoms. Bi-cheon(looks of an angel on the wing) statue is named from an angel fly in the sky. It mainly expressed the sun, a cloud, cherry blossoms(city flower) and Baek-gu. The flower is given expression to number like this. It means “5” letters the shape of a branch and “0” of the sun is “50”. This is commemorate the raising of status of Jin-hae city which seeing 50th anniversary. Five Baek-gu soar up making a pair at a part in Bi-cheon statue. Moreover; this show citizen cooperate each other and advance in one direction. Dang-jwa is a part that a wooden bell hammer which strike a bell. It mostly forms a frame of a round shape. A large bell of Jin-hae is also designed cherry flowers like that. Ha-dae(a belt on the lower end of a bell) is formed of thick line and design. This is to enhance a damage, a sound and the quality. It emphasized the image of Jin-hae as represent the flowers and the turtle ship(an iron-clad warship in the shape of a turtle). I consider the urgent, problem is development of data about the design and to look out for distinguished designer. The development of a pattern design insufficient is caused by professional designer`s absence.
