일반적인 정보디자인 주요 개념들은 서구의 시각으로 형성된 것으로 정보의 효율적 전달을 위해 고려되어야하는 원리, 요소, 역사들을 서구 문화 중심으로 해석되어 왔다. 정보디자인은 특정 문화에만 국한된 것이 아니라 보편적인 성격의 학문이며, 한국도 우수한 기록 문화를 보유한 나라로 다양한 유형과 형태의 정보디자인 관련 자료들을 보유하고 있다. 이에 본 연구는 정보디자인의 방법론인 구조화, 시각화를 중심으로 우리의 기록문화 중 하나인 `성학십도`의 특성을 분석하고 한국의 기록문화가 정보디자인의 역사에서 어떻게 기여하는지를 제시하였다. 성학십도는 퇴계 이황이 성인(聖人)이 되기 위해 알아야 할 성리학의 핵심적인 내용을 열 개의 도해로 요약·정리한 책이다. 당시의 인쇄 기술과 표현방법의 한계 안에서 성리학의 본질이 훼손되지 않게 구조화와 시각화가 이루어졌으며, 조선 유교문화에 따른 정보 읽기 방식이 채용되어 있다. 그래픽 요소 측면에서 위치, 방향, 원과 사각형의 형태 활용이 중심이 되며, 핵심 키워드로 내용을 전달하고 있다. 성학십도의 가장 탁월한 우수성은 복잡하고 어려운 텍스트 중심의 성리학의 원리와 수행방법들을 사용자의 이해를 돕도록 10개의 그림을 활용하여 보다 쉽게 표현하고자 한 그들의 정신과 자세라 할 수 있다.

The concept of information design is formed by modern European approaches. This means various elements for efficient communication have been analyzed from viewpoints of Western culture. Information design is a science composed all over the world. Korea also has excellent documentary culture, and the sources of diverse types and forms related with the information design. This study has the purpose for analyzing characteristics of `Sunghaksipdo(성학십도)` focusing on the organization and visualization of information. `Sunghaksipdo` is the book summarizing and regulating major Confucian philosophy theories and practical methodologies to guide a young prince for a wise leader with mixed explanation text and graphics. Within limited printing technique and expressional methods in Chosun dynasty, the most effective approaches to organize and visualize information are applied. With view of graphic elements, position, direction, abstract shape are main factor for visualizing. The important lesson from `Sunghaksipdo` is the spirit and attitude to convert and express complex and vast text data into easy and clear visualized information.
