연구배경 도로를 이용하는 운전자에게 목적지 안내정보를 제공하는 기능적 시설물인 도로표지판은 인력과 물자이동을 위한 국가인프라로서 중요성이 증대되고 있다. 한국의 경우 지명과 시설물 중심의 도로안내체계를 도로명 중심의 정보체계로 전환하고 있다. 연구방법 새롭게 개발되어 사용되는 도로명표지판 디자인체계의 유효성을 객관화하기 위하여 먼저 도로표지판의 정보안내체계의 개념과 일반적 구성을 알아본 후, 도로정보체계의 유사성을 가진 영국의 도포표지판과 상호 비교분석한다. 이는 목적지에 이르기 위한 정보체계의 구성을 규명하는 과정을 포함한다. 개별 국가별 표지판 사용 환경과 사회적 적용 배경이 포함된 디자인구성체계는 정보체계, 개별 정보단위 요소의 운영방법을 분석대상으로 삼았다. 상호 대응되는 표지판정보구성요소와 운용시스템 장단점을 비교하는 과정을 거쳐 양국 표지판 디자인체계의 정보소통체계 의 효율성과 차이점을 알아본다. 연구결과 도로명표지판은 공간정보와 선형정보를 운전자에게 동시에 제공하는 안내방식으로 전환기적 운영방법으로 평가될 수 있다. 도심을 중심으로 비슷한 도로여건을 가진 한국과 영국의 도로표지판 정보체계는 일반적인 도로명 및 노선정보 중심의 도로안내체계에 비해 지역적 특성을 반영하여 운용되고 있다. 결론 디자인 체계의 효율성면에서는 한국의 경우가 영국에 비해 운용의 편리함은 있으나 정보전달의 시각적 변별성은 영국의 경우가 좀 더 세밀하고 단계별 순차적 정보인지과정을 배려했다고 볼 수 있다. 한국의 도로표지판은 영국의 표지판에 비해 정보 밀집도가 높으나 도로정보 안내체계 전환기의 측면에서는 그 유효성이 인정될 수 있다.
