연구배경 시각예술에 있어 언어의 사용은 다양한 매체와 표현방식으로 고대에서부터 현대에 이르기 까지 단순한 텍스트의 영역을 넘어서는 조형성을 위한 요소로서 작용해 왔다. 본 연구는 모더니즘에 대한 예술적 인식론의 반향으로 탄생한 개념미술에서 텍스트의 조형성 중심으로 대중들에게 언어적 표현이 어떠한 형식으로 확장되었는지 매체의 시각적 활용을 중심으로 살피고자 한다. 연구방법 언어 혹은 텍스트의 시각적 조형성과 매체확장적 방법론을 이해하기 위하여 우선 개념미술과 그 표현 방법에 대한연구를 진행한다. 텍스트가 시각적인 예술영역에서 대중과 어떠한 수렴과정을 거치는지 확인하기 위하여 제니 홀저와 바바라 크루거의 작업에 대하여 분석하도록 한다. 연구결과 언어의 사용은 텍스트가 가지고 있는 본래의 기능과 함께 매체의 전용을 가능하게 하는 도구로서 발전하게 된다. 제니 홀저와 바바라 크루거는 텍스트의 형식적 내용적 확장성에 개인의 서술 혹은 사회적 메시지의 결합을 시도하여 작가에 의한 매체 전용의 예를 보여주게 된다. 결론 제니 홀저는 순수미술 영역에서 텍스트를 시각적 조형성의 중심으로 사용하기 시작하여 매체의 역할을 텍스트의 일부로 수렴하게 하는 실험을 진행하게 된다. 이를 통해 언어는 언어자체의 기능에 한정되지 않고 조형적 커뮤니케이션의 시스템으로 발전한다. 크루거의 경우는 상업적 환경에 대한 대중매체를 이용한 사회성이 반영된 매체전복의 시각시스템을 구축하고 청중에게 강한 메시지를 역설적으로 전달하는 방식을 취함으로서 매스미디어의 역살을 역이용하는 방법을 사용한다. 개념미술에 있어 언어의 역할은 대중의 참여와 함께 해석의 다양성이 우선시 되는 매체의 확장성에 기여하게 된다.
