본고는 조선시대 사대부 남성 유서의 사회문화적 기능과 그 의미를 밝히는 데 주된 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 먼저 유서의 사회문화적 속성을 점검하여 조선시대 사대부 남성 유서가 당대의 사회문화와 긴밀하게 연결될 수 있었던 내적 근거를 찾고자 하였다. 그리고 이어서 가(家)를 너머 당대의 사회문화에 끼친 유서의 영향을 살펴 유서의 사화문화적 기능과 의미를 도출하고자 하였다. 현재 확인 가능한 대부분의 유서는 죽음을 매개로 망자의 거부할 수 없는 강력한 메시지로 이해되어 한 집안에서 대를 이어 전해지고 실천되었으며, 그 대상뿐 아니라 다른 여러 사람에게도 읽히어 개인을 넘어 가(家)로, 가를 넘어 사회 전반으로 그 영향력을 확대해 왔음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 유교적 실천 덕목을 가르친 유훈형(遺訓形) 유서의 경우 가문의 전통성을 확립하고 정체성을 구축하는 데 영향을 주었고, 상장례와 제례 등과 관련된 망자의 사후 문제를 주로 다룬 유명형(遺命形) 유서의 경우 의례(儀禮)의 실천과 예학(禮學)의 전수와 연결되어 유교의 이념과 가치의 사회적 구축과 확장에도 기여했음을 확인할 수 있었다. 결국 유서는 사대부들이 지향했던 유교의 실천 덕목과 예학을 삶 속에서 구체적으로 실천하는 데 있어서 매우 의미 있는 역할을 수행했음이 분명하다. 비록 유서마다 같고 다름의 차이가 있고 그 차이만큼 사회문화적 의미 또한 달라지지만, 그 전체를 조망해보면 유서가 당대의 사회문화에서 유의미한 가치를 지니고 있음을 알 수 있다. 유서를 문학뿐 아니라 사회학과 교육학 등 여타 인문학의 시선으로 읽어낼 수 있는 것도 여기에 기인한다.

This paper aims at revealing sociocultural function and meaning of Sadeabu men(scholar-gentry class)`s Wills in the Joseon Dynasty. For this aim, through inspecting firstly sociocultural features of wills this paper tried to seek internal evidences that Sadeabu men`s wills were closely connected with society and culture in those days. Then, with studying wills this paper would draw sociocultural function and meaning of wills which affected to society and culture in those days beyond noble family. Most of wills now checked were understood as irresistible and strong messages from the dead, they were conveyed and practiced in a certain family line. Also they were read by not only the dead`s family but also other people, their influences were spreaded to whole society, beyond individuals and family. Especially, the kind of Yuhunhyeong(wills containing Confucian fulfill virtues: 遺訓形) affected to establish traditionality and construct identity of family. The kind of Yumyeonghyeong(wills containing orders dealing with problems of after death of people related bier funeral: 遺命形) contributed to social construction and extension of Confucian ideology and values connected to fulfill rituals and initiate courtesy. This paper confirmed these wills. In final analysis, wills served as significant role in concretely performing manners and fulfill virtues of Confucianism supported by Sadaebu in real life. Although each will had different and common features, and meaning of society varied by differences, prospecting whole aspects of wills, this paper confirmed that wills apparently had meaningful values of society and culture in those days. It is came from that wills are read by view of not only literature but also view of other humanities such as sociology, pedagogy and so on.
