이 논문은 아르헨티나 작가 루이사 발렌수엘라의 작품에 유독 하위주체들이 주인공과 주변인물로 등장한다는 데 착안하였다. 이러한 특징은 아르헨티나 민주화가 구현된 1983년 이후에 출간된 작품에서 두드러진다. 이 논문에서는 발렌수엘라의 작품에서 타자성을 띤 하위주체들이 어떠한 방식으로 재현되며, 이들의 욕망과 정체성이 또 다른 하위주체를 만남으로써 겪는 변화를 분석하고자 한다. 발렌수엘라의 주인공들은 억압받는 사람들을 시혜의 대상이나 도움을 필요로 하는 약자로 인식한 채 그들을 대변하지 않는다. 오히려, 발렌수엘라의 하위주체는 또 다른 하위주체에게 `말을 걸면서`, 특히 보조인물들이 주인공에게 `말을 걸면서` 중심인물로 하여금 자신의 욕망을 직시하게 하고, 나아가 혼란스러웠던 정체성을 확립하게끔 길잡이 역할을 한다. 즉, 자신의 욕망을 제대로 인식하지 못한 채 정체성의 혼란을 겪던 주인공들은 성, 계급, 인종적으로 약자인 보조인물을 통해 자신의 주체성을 재확보하고 혼란스러웠던 정체성을 확립하며 마침내 `말하기` 시작한다.

Luisa Valenzuela is a writer who continues to discuss subalterns` status and their voices. This is why she deals with the majority of her main characters and assistant ones as subalterns. In most literary works, subalterns are `spoken` by the intellectual so that they may `speak` with their own voices. Differently from these works, Valenzuela`s protagonists don`t only `speak to` subaltern but also regard the oppressed as the object that needs a dispensation of help. Rather than that, Valenzuela`s subalterns tend to give a hand and provide guidance for another subaltern (in many cases, they serve as a useful guide for protagonists full of inner conflict and lack of subjectivity) so that she/he can realize her/his own forgotten desire and can transform her/his identity. Thanks for the otherness, main characters accomplish to recover their subjectivity, establish their identity, and at last start to `speak` recovering their own voice.
