속담은 구비문학의 한 갈래로 한 민족의 사상, 감정, 해학, 지혜가 간결하게 함축되어 있는 교훈적이고 풍자적인 언어표현방식이다. 따라서 속담에는 특정 민족의 공통된 경험과 정서가 반영되기 마련이다. 하지만 이와 동시에 시간적·공간적 제약을 초월한 인류의 보편적 정서와 삶의 지혜가 담겨 있기도 하다. 구체적인 수사법이나 비유, 표현방식에는 차이가 있지만, 인간에 대한 통찰, 인생에 대한 교훈을 전달하는 속담의 기본적인 가치는 예나 지금이나 변함없이 이어져 오고 있다. 폴란드와 한국에서도 그 의미가 유사하거나 동일해서 서로 연결 지을 수 있는 속담들이 상당수 발견된다. 본 논문에서는 21세기에 말이나 글에서 널리 인용되고 있는 폴란드와 한국 속담 중에서 말(言)을 주제로 한 속담들을 골라 의미상의 공통점과 형태상의 차이점을 비교 분석해보도록 하겠다. 이를 통해 인류의 보편적인 사고방식이 폴란드와 한국의 속담에서 각각 어떤 양상으로 표현되고 있는지 비교해보고, 말에 대한 양국의 인식을 문화적인 관점에서 살펴보는 것이 본 연구의 주된 목적이다.

In terms of an intercultural understanding, it is estimated that the study on proverbs, which are deeply rooted in the lives of given nations, is useful enough to understand culture, history, religions, customs and so on quickly and easily. A proverb is a moral and satirical statement or expression, which includes ideas, emotions, humor, and wisdom of a given nation. Therefore, it generally reflects shared experiences of a given nation. At the same time it also contains universal human thinking and advice concerning life beyond time and space. For a proverb to be created and established, it needs to have been orally quoted and handed down from generation to generation for a long period of time. Though diversity and differences in specific rhetorics, metaphors, and a way of expression, all proverbs have preserved their fundamental values on human insights and morality concerning life. Therefore, it is not surprising that many proverbs in different countries share similar meanings. Numerous proverbs have been found in Korea and Poland that are relatable to one another in the same or similar meaning. This study compared and analyzed Korean and Polish proverbs concerning language and speech that are widely used in daily conversations and texts in the 21th century. The main purpose of this study is to examine the modes of expression in Korean and Polish proverbs concerning language and speech from a cultural perspective, and also to analyze not only universalism reflected on proverbs of both countries, but also the differences of perception on language and speech between Poland and Korea.
