본 논문은 러시아인들의 정신사에서 독특한 구교도의 기원과 러시아 교회와 신앙의 이중 구조 문제를 탐색한다. 러시아 구교도들은 파문 이후 오랜 박해와 고립의 끔찍한 고통 속에서도 살아 남아 경건주의 교리와 전통 예식을 고수했다. 구교도들은 19세기 말까지 항상 러시아 정교 회 뿐만 아니라 중앙 전제정부와 사법적 경찰로부터 혹독한 박해를 받았다. 그러나 이 구교도들 은 러시아의 정신과 사상사에서 특이한 변종의 집단으로 보이지만 그들의 정신세계는 오히려 전통 러시아 문화의 원류에 속한다는 평가를 받기도 한다. 본 논문은 1860년대부터 급격히 성장한 러시아의 사적 상인·기업가 계층의 상당수가 러시아 구교도 출신이었다는 사실을 중시 여기면서 이들의 관계를 러시아의 신앙의 이중구조 특성의 측면에서 고찰해 볼 것이다. 전제정부는 대 분열이후 구교도를 변방으로 추방한 이후에도 왜 그토록 오랜 기간 박해했으며, 구교도 또한 왜 그토록 저항했는가? 구교도들의 영적, 정신적 세계관은 어떠한 특성을 띤 것인가? 합리주의적 지식이나 학문적 분석의 정신보다 종교적 심성이나 영적 세계에 그토록 집착한 구교도들의 정신세계의 특이성은 어디에서 비롯된 것일까? 구교도의 사회경제적 공동체 생활의 특성이나 가치관들의 문제가 러시아의 문화 체계의 주도권을 둘러싸고 교회와 전제정부의 관계에 어떤 함축된 의미를 띠는 것일까에 대해서 검토할 것이다.

This paper deals with the issues of the spiritual structure, value and social and cultural traditions of the Old Believer merchant class of nineteenth century of Russia. In order to explore the essential nature and cultural origin, it discusses the background of the unique characteristics of Russian Orthodox Church during the period of late Moscovite princedom and early Romanov. Then it argues the basic causes of the Great Church Schism and spiritual resistance of including Avvakum and the dissident old believers. This also examines how the dissident old believers could survive despite the century-long spiritual persecution and physical oppression, and what role their idea did play and transform in their social and economic community life We can explore what meant in the cultural and religious change the post-raskol relation between the absolutist state and the Russian Old Believer reaction.
