본 연구의 목적은 부산광역시교육청 소속의 중학교 자유학기제 희망학교 운영 사례를 분석하여 자유학기제의 안정적인 정착을 위한 시사점을 제공하는 것이다. 본 연구에 참여한 학교는 총 6개이며, 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대부분의 자유학기제 희망학교들은 교육청의 요청과 학교장 혹은 교감의 적극적인 의지가 반영되어 자유학기제를 시작하게 되었다. 둘째, 자유학기제 운영을 위해 교사들은 수업시수 변경과 같은 교육과정 재구성, 학생 활동 중심의 수업방식 및 평가방식의 변화를 이끌어 냈다. 끝으로, 학생의 수업 태도 변화가 자유학기제의 가장 큰 성과로 나타났으며, 교사 업무시간의 부족, 교사 간 갈등 등은 자유학기제 운영의 어려움으로 확인되었다.

The purpose of this study is to provide a suggestion for the stable settlement of `Free Semester` by analyzing the cases of `Free semester` hope schools in Busan Metropolitan City office of Education. The total number of schools participating in this study is 6, and the main results are as follows. First, most hope schools have started `Free Semester` because of requesting from the office of Education and the active involvement of the principal or vice principal. Second, for the free semester system, the teachers lead the change of curriculum such as change of the number of classes, the change of teaching method and evaluation method centered on student activities. Finally, the change of attitude of the students showed the greatest achievement of the free semester system, and lack of teacher working time, conflict between teachers were found to be difficult to operate the free school system.
