최인호의 소설을 종교적으로 접근한 논의는 그다지 많지 않다. 하지만 최인호가 갖고 있는 작가의식의 한 바탕은 종교라 할 수 있다. 이에 본고에서는 불교적 인식이 잘 나타나는 최인호의 ≪길 없는 길≫을 중심으로 인간의 실존적 모색을 고찰해 보았다. 먼저 `경허의 수행과정과 시대적 대응`에서는 `경허`의 수행과정을 통해 시대에 대한 변화를 추구하는 모습을 살펴보았다. 이것은 불교적 인식이 인간의 실존의식의 바탕이 됨을 알 수 있게 한다. 다음으로 `구도적 열망과 실천적 자세`에서는 `경허`를 통한 주인공 `나`의 지식인으로서의 내적변화를 살펴보았다. 이것은 불교적 인식을 통한 개인의 구제가 사회의 구제와 불가분의 관계에 놓여 있다는 것을 확인하게 한다. 이와 같이 ≪길 없는 길≫에 나타난 불교적 인식은 자본주의적 근대화의 극복과 본질적 삶의 내적인 욕구에 대한 최인호의 문학적 고민을 찾아 볼 수 있게 한다. 더 나아가 최인호의 문학세계를 보다 폭넓게 논의해 보는 계기를 주고 있다.

There are not many discussions that made a religious approach to Choi In-ho`s novels, but the basis of his consciousness as a writer is religion. This study thus set out to examine man`s search for existence with a focus on his The Road with No Way, which shows his Buddhist perceptions clearly. The section on “Gyeongheo`s process of asceticism and periodic responses” first examined the ways of pursuing changes to the times through the asceticism process of “Gyeongheo.” It indicates that Buddhist perceptions become a foundation for man`s consciousness of existence. Then the section on “truth-seeking desire and practical attitude” depicted the internal changes of “I,” the protagonist, as an intellectual through “Gyeongheo.” It confirms that saving an individual via Buddhist perceptions is in an inseparable relation with saving the society. The Buddhist perceptions found in his The Road with No Way help the readers look for his literary worries about the conquest of capitalist modernization and the internal desire of essential life. Furthermore, they offer a chance to discuss his literary world more broadly.
