이 글은 방현석의 노동소설 <새벽출정>(1989)과 <내일을 여는 집>(1990)이 `노동자 계급의 전망`으로 환원되지 않는 소재와 주제에 천착했음에 주목하고, 그 의미와 한계를 밝혔다. <새벽출정>은 철순, 미정, 민영 세 여성 노동자들의 우정과 철순의 죽음, 위장 폐업 투쟁 과정을 아름답고 섬세하게 포착한다. 작가는 상대적으로 의식화가 덜 된 민영을 통해 당대의 눈으로는 주목되지 않은 갈등하고 회의하는 노동자의 내면을 그려냈으며 노동 그 자체의 의미를 사유할 수 있었다. 한편 <내일을 여는 집>은 남녀평등에 대한 진보적인 입장을 취하며 공장 노동과 가사 노동의 성별분업이 역전된 삶의 형태를 보여준다. 그러나 아버지에서 아들로 이어지는 남성 노동자 계급의 전망은 노동하고 투쟁하는 아내의 형상이 갖는 의미를 제한하는 결과로 작용하게 된다.

This paper interprets Bang Hyeon-seok`s labor novels―“Off to Battle at Dawn”(1989) and “The House That Opens Tomorrow”(1990)―deal with subjects that are not reduced to `prospect of the working class`. Also this paper reveals its meaning. “Off to Battle at Dawn” captures beautifully and delicately the three women laborers` friendship, one`s death, and process of struggle. The writer depicted the inside of a laborer who conflict and doubt, that has not been received little attention by the eyes of the contemporary and could think of the meaning of labor itself, through a laborer who is relatively less conscientize. Meanwhile, “The House That Opens Tomorrow” takes a progressive position on equality between men and women and shows a form of life in which the sexual division of labor between the factory work and housework is reversed. But the prospect of the male working class, from father to son, limits the meaning of conception of wife who works and struggles.
