This essay examines the critical assessment of Hugh Lofting`s The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle as a winner of the Newbery Medal by focusing on three points: the viewpoint of the narrator, language as a communication tool between animals and humans, and the representations of the war and imperialism in the Western history. I conclude that this story encourages children to be objective observers for the hidden and negative aspect of their own history and provide readers with the importance of coexistence with others.
