This essay examines the critical assessment of Hugh Lofting`s The Voyages of Dr. Dolittle as a winner of the Newbery Medal by focusing on three points: the viewpoint of the narrator, language as a communication tool between animals and humans, and the representations of the war and imperialism in the Western history. I conclude that this story encourages children to be objective observers for the hidden and negative aspect of their own history and provide readers with the importance of coexistence with others.

I. Introduction: Beginning of the Newbery Award and Education of History
II. Education and Labor: The Viewpoint of the Narrator in Children`s literature.
III. Language as a Golden Bough of Communication.
