日本の中世紀行文は、古代の文學世界の繼承を基盤としている。それは名所をモチ一フとする記述で明確になる。『東關紀行』と『十六夜日記』とは、實景より和歌的な表現世界の觀念的なイメ一ジの樺組みの中で名所を鑑賞しようとした。しかしながら、兩紀行文よりも先立って成立した『海道記』の名所に對する敍述は、平安時代の傳統とは異なる視線である。『海道記』のこのような脫王朝的な樣相は、`道`の表現においても同樣である。『海道記』の表現は、同時代の他の紀行文とはことなり、東海道という`道`を媒介として展開される特徵を持つ。平安時代の旅が地方の任地に赴任した地方官によるものであるならば、中世時代は、`道`の制度的な整備を基盤とする。『海道記』の敍述は、そのような中世時代の`道`の意味と機能がよく表れている。 したがって、『海道記』の敍述は、傳統繼承の觀点で評價されるより、中世時代の時·空間を取り合わせた觀点でアプロ一チしなければならない。樣樣なジャンルの文學作品は、その國の社會と文化、價値觀などを理解する一つの手がかりになる。そうだとするなら、日本紀行文學において、傳統的な表現の繼承とは異なる樣相を持つ『海道記』こそ、日本の中世時代の文學と文化基盤を理解する例のバロメ一タ一と言えよう。

From ancient times to the present, “travel,” one of the major components of Japanese culture base, has been counted as an important literary subject in Japanese literature. Saigyo, a poet who wrote about traveling, traveled in search of traces of Noin; and Basho, who traced Saigyo`s path, developed a new poetic sense calledHaikai. The tradition of following someone`s trace is one of the generally-seen material in Japanese literary tradition. In Japanese medieval travel literature, it starts from the ancient travel literature`s tradition and it is easily found in the literary description of attractions. In The Tokankiko and Izayoi Nikki, the attraction spot is depicted in an idealistic image from Waka style narrative rather than in a realistic image. However, in The Kaidoki, written before The Tokankiko and Izayoi Nikki, differentiated by its non-traditional narrative in Heian period. In The Kaidoki, the “road” described in specific manner, stepped aside from the dynastic viewpoint. Unlike other literature of that era, the story in The Kaidoki develope its narrative by focusing on a road called Tokaido. In Heian period, the narrative of travel was about the provincial governors issued to local province. In The Kaidoki, the narrative is about the road itself, its social construction, and meaning in the middle ages of Japan. The narrative in The Kaidoki, therefore, should considered in terms of enjoyment of medieval time and space rather than follower`s tradition. Literatures in variety of genre operates as a key to understand a nation`s society, culture and values. In this perspective, The Kaidoki can be counted as one of the key materials to tunderstand Japanese medieval literary and cultural background.
