본 논문은 `현대한국사회의 아동들과 청소년들에게 어떠한 인성교육이 적합한가?`라는 물음에 답하기 위해 작성되었다. 개방적 정보사회이며 다원화사회인 한국사회에서 성장하고 있는 오늘날의 아동들과 청소년에게 `가치덕목 중심` 접근 보다는 `역량 중심` 접근의 인성교육이 적합하다고 필자는 판단하며, 이러한 판단에 따라 본 논문은 미국에서 개발되어 영어권을 중심으로 널리 보급되고 있는 사회정서학습 (Social & Emotional Learning: SEL)을 역량 중심 인성교육의 대표적 사례로 고찰한다. 사회정서학습이 한국의 인성교육에 얼마나 기여할 수 있는 지 알아보기 위해서 먼저 한국사회에서 논의되고 있는 인성교육의 요소들(덕목, 역량)을 조사하고 요약한다. 그 다음 사회정서학습을 통해 발달시킬 수 있는 인성요소들을 분석하여 한국사회의 인성교육 요소들과 비교하고 논의한다. 이러한 연구의 결과, 본 논문은 사회정서학습이 한국사회 인성교육 요소들을 대부분 충족시킨다고 결론짓는다. 다만 사회정서학습은 정의적(情意的) 발달에 초점이 있는 만큼 지적인 측면의 보완이 요구되며, 이러한 면에서 사회정서학습과 도덕교육 또는 덕목 중심 인성교육의 협력이 필요하다고 주장한다.

The thesis is designed to answer, which Human Character Education is suitable for the today`s korean children and young adults. Korean society is becoming increasingly a open information society and pluralistic society, where children and teenagers is growing as digital nomad. For this generation is more suitable `the competency based character education` rather than `the virtue based character education`. This thesis considers Social & Emotional Learning(SEL) as a representative example of competency based character education. Social & Emotion Learning is developed in the United States and ist widely distributed around the English Language. To see how Social & Emotion Learning can contribute to Korean character education, first examine and summarize the human character factors that are being discussed in Korean society. Next, analyze and discuss human character factors that can develop through Social & Emotion Learning and compare them with the human character factors in Korean society. As a result of this study, the thesis concludes that Social & Emotion Learning is largely satisfying the Korean Human Character Education. Social & Emotion Learning, however, focuses on affective development. Therefore, intelligent side effects need to be complemented. In this regard, it argues that the collaboration of Social & Emotion Learning and Moral Education is necessary.
