이 글은 변증법의 전개과정을 특히 우리의 근현대사상사를 배경으로 반성해 보고 오늘의 관점에서 변증법에 기대할 수 있는 바를 점검해 보려는 의도에서 작성되었다. 변증법이 현실의 필연적 발전 연관을 드러내 준다는 주장은 과도하다고 할 수 있겠지만, 변증법을 통해 현실의 중요한 발전 연관을 포착하려는 시도는 여전히 유효하다. 이를 위해서는 대립과 모순을 통한 발전 과정을 단선적이거나 폐쇄적으로 바라보지 않는 것이 긴요하다. 우리사회에 수용되어 온 변증법 사상 또한 이렇게 개방적인 모색의 발전 과정으로 이해할 수 있다. 이러한 바탕 위에서 이 글은 오늘날 변증법이 다루어야 할 중심적 과제로 `진보`의 문제를 꼽고, 이를 기술발전과 정치의 층위를 거쳐 타자 지향적 윤리의 차원에서 조망해 보고자 한다.

Could the development of thoughts of dialectics be understood through the dialectic process? This paper aims to survey the problems of dialectics, especially in Korean thoughts of our epoch. We find it immoderate to assert that dialectics exposes the inevitable development of reality. However, the attempt to capture some important aspects of reality and thoughts by dialectics still remains effective, if it is grasped as a non-linear and open process. One should accept the over-determinations of instances and the uncertainty of consequences. On this basis, this essay seeks `progress` as a central task to be addressed by dialectics today.
