이 글의 목적은 1934년에 윤백남이 편집 감수한 『조선야사전집』이 민족의 역사성을 강화하는 데 기여할 출간물이었음을 강조하려는 데 있었다. 그를 위하여 『조선야사전집』의 취지와 구성 체제를 살펴보았다. 그에 따라 『조선야사전집』은 1909~1911년에 조선고서간행회에서 출간된 『대동야승(大東野乘)』과 1797년(정조 21년) 이긍익이 편찬하였다고 알려진 『연려실기술(燃藜室記述)』 등을 주요저본으로 삼고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 무엇보다도 『조선야사전집』은 한문으로 전해오던 『대동야승』과 『연려실기술』 등을 최초로 국한혼용체로 정리하여 가독성을 높이고 독자의 저변확대를 실천한 의의를 갖고 있다. 잘 알려진 것처럼 1930년대는 야담의 대중화가 이루어졌던 시기이다. 그렇지만 대중화와 상업성이 강해지면서 상대적으로 야담의 역사적 의의는 희석된 측면도 있다. 그런 흐름 속에서 1934년에 출간된 『조선야사전집』은 야사 자료의 확산을 실천하면서 민족의 역사와 문제의식을 깨우치는 역할을 담당했을 것이다. 또한 『조선야사전집』은 1930년대에도 그 당시에 정체되어 있던 역사를 이해하고 연구하는 데 주요한 자료로 인지되었었다. 따라서 『조선야사전집』은 일제강점기의 엄혹한 시기에도 민족의 역사를 되새기고 전승하는 책무를 짊어진 독서물이었다 할 수 있다.

This paper aimed to argue that 『The complete series of unofficial history of the Joseon Dynasty』, which was edited and supervised by Yun, Baek-Nam in 1934, contributes to enhancing the natural history of Korea by examining the concept and structure of the publication. I found that both 『Taedongyasung』, which is known as the series of unofficial historical stories, and 『Oyonlyosilkisul』, which narrates the historical consciousness of the late Joseon Dynasty, are the main and important scripts of 『The complete series of an unofficial history of the Joseon Dynasty』. Above all, the publication is significant in that it was a first mixed language publication of Korean and Chinese, and that it had a wide range of readership because of its highly readability, despite 『Taedongyasung』 and 『Oyonlyosilkisul』 being written in translations of Chinese characters. As is well known, the 1930s was the era of popularizing unofficial historical stories. Evidently, the historical significance of unofficial historical stories became diminished, as popularization and commercialization became stronger. However, even in those times, 『The complete series of unofficial history of the Joseon Dynasty』 published in 1934 was a significant source of national history and historical consciousness. Furthermore, the publication functioned as an important basis for developing the understanding and study of history that was stalled during the Japanese occupation. Therefore, 『The complete series of unofficial history of the Joseon Dynasty』 is a valuable reading material that serves to review and pass down the history of the Korean people.
