The storytelling method, which is an approach that uses fun stories to learn, focuses on affective domains such as interest for learning, participation, and focused attitude rather than on the functional aspects of a language. Therefore, this method enables to not only form one`s identity by telling one`s own emotions and thoughts to others but also share cultures with others and create stories. Schema is part of the story method; therefore, humans tend to be more familiar with two-way communication in stories compared to a one-way delivery of information. This also helps them remember the stories better.
Exposure to literary language is required as one of the natural processes of learning a language. The structures of stories and plots are helpful for readers to understand and remember new stories. As children`s literature often has multilayered genres, and as the interpretation of each story can differ depending on a reader`s and maturity, it is a readily available resource to use in diverse educational phases. Among the genres in children`s literature, children`s poems can be considered as appropriate educational materials for Korean learners abroad because, in general, children`s poems possess characteristics of simple forms and metaphors that are easy to comprehend. In addition, phrases are frequently repeated; therefore, it creates a sense of enjoyment in learning the language because listening to stories is convenient and uncomplicated. Further, as children`s poems have various lengths, styles, and topics, this genre has another merit in that it can be used according to the educational levels and class schedules of those learning Korean without artificially extracting or reconstructing natural Korean expressions for classroom use.
