본 연구는 2016년 미국 대선에서 백인 유권자들의 자민족중심주의가 유권자들의 태도와 투표 결정에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 분석하였다. 내집단과 외집단의 온도점수 차이를 이용하여 측정한 자민족중심주의 성향 지수를 바탕으로 분석한 결과, 자민족중심주의 성향이 강한 백인 유권자들의 정치적 정향과 이슈에 대한 태도, 그리고 후보자 선택은 자민족중심주의 성향이 약한 백인 유권자들의 그것과 큰 차이를 보였다. 자민족중심주의 성향이 강한 유권자들은 이념적으로 보수적이고 공화당을 지지하는 경향이 강하며 정치적 이슈들에 있어서도 상당히 보수적인 입장을 가지고 있었다. 유권자들의 투표 선택에 있어서도 자민족중심주의는 전통적인 투표선택 요인인 학력, 정당일체감, 이슈에 대한 태도, 경제 상황 평가 등과 함께 핵심적인 역할을 하였던 것으로 분석되었다. 히스패닉을 비롯한 소수집단 유권자의 수와 영향력 확대가 예상되는 가운데 본 연구의 결과는 어떻게 자민족중심주의를 극복할 것인가가 향후 미국 정치의 주요 아젠다가 될 것이라는 것을 시사한다.

This study examines the effect of white voters` ethnocentrism in the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. Using ethnocentrism measured by the differences between in-group and out-group in the thermometer scores that white voters gave, the analyses demonstrate significant and sizable differences between voters with weak ethnocentric orientation and those with strong orientation in political attitudes and vote choice. Ethnocentric voters tend to be conservatives and Republican Party supporters, and to have conservative attitudes toward issues pivotal in American politics. Ethnocentrism also appears to play a key role in vote decision even when the major factors of vote choice including socio-economic, economic, psychological factors, and attitudes toward issues are controlled for. Given the expectation that the sizes and the influences of Hispanic voters and other minority groups will multiply, the result of this study implies that how to surmount ethnocentrism causing politics of hostility and exclusion will be the key agenda in the U. S. politics.
