본 논문은 우리나라 문화 속에 깊이 자리하고 있는 `용`과 `용왕`의 의미를 구분하고, 용왕의 형상을 문헌을 통해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 용은 대체로 군왕의 상징으로 권위가 인정되면서 신격으로 자리를 잡았으며, 이 과정을 통해 현재 널리 알려진 용의 형상이 확립되었다. 그러나 용은 수신으로서의 성격을 강하게 지니고 있다. 즉 우리나라의 전통적인 수신인 `용왕`과 동일한 개념을 가지고 있다. 군왕을 상징하는 용의 형상은 용왕의 신격을 차용하여 형성된 것이라고 할 수 있다. 우리나라 고유의 수신인 `용왕`은 해안 지역을 중심으로 신앙되었으며, 현재는 바다, 하천, 연못, 우물 등 물이 있는 곳이면 어디에나 존재하는 신격이다. 그러나 다양한 동물의 특징을 종합하여 상상의 형상을 가지고 있는 `용`과는 다르게 용왕은 구체적인 형상이 나타나 있지 않다. 그러나 『삼국유사』에 등장하는 여러 가지의 용관련 이야기와 각종 문학작품을 분석해 본 결과 용왕은 `若`이라는 명칭으로도 불렸으며, 거북의 형상과 비슷한 모습이었음을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 거북의 모습과 동일한 것은 아니다. 몸체는 거북의 모습이지만 머리의 모양이 전혀 다른 형상으로 나타나고 있다. 전형적인 모습이 바로 거북선의 모습이라고 할 수 있다.

This study aims at differentiating the meaning of the dragon from that of the Dragon King of the Sea(龍王) imbedded deep in our culture and investigating the figuration of the Dragon King of the Sea(龍王) through literature review. The dragon has the widely known figuration as it has been recognized as the prestige of the symbol of the king. However, the dragon originally has characteristics as the God of the Water(水神), which means that it has the identical concept with the Dragon King of the Sea(龍王), the traditional water deity in our country. The figuration of the dragon symbolizing the king is formed by borrowing the divinity of the Dragon King of the Sea(龍王). The Dragon King of the Sea(龍王), the traditional water deity in our country has been worshipped as God along the waterfront, but now the divinity exists everywhere that has water, such as oceans, rivers, ponds and wells. Yet, the Dragon King of the Sea(龍王) does not show specific figurations, which is different from the dragon that has imaginative figuration synthesizing all the features of a variety of animals. However, it has been found by analysing all the stories and literature dealing with dragons in Samkukyusa(三國遺事) that the Dragon King of the Sea(龍王) was referred to `Yak`(若) and its shape was similar to turtles. Their shapes are not the same although its shape is similar. The shape of the body looks like the appearance of turtles but the head looks totally different, which can be found in the Turtle Ship.
