이 연구는 계모형 소설의 귀신 형상이 갖는 의미를 흥미성과 교훈성의 관점에서 살펴본 것이다. 소설은 흥미성을 본령으로 하지만, 성리학을 이념으로 하는 고전소설의 시대에서 소설이 존재하기 위해서는 교훈성을 담보해야만 했다. 이때 문제가 되는 것은 귀신이다. 성리학에서 귀신은 세상만물의 원리를 드러내는 이론으로 정리되었다. 이 귀신론은 불교나 무속의 귀신을 부정한다. 그러나 귀신이야기는 다양한 형태로 향유되었다. 이는 귀신이라는 소재가 가진 흥미성의 강도를 증명한다. 전기소설의 귀신과 비교했을 때 계모형 소설의 귀신은 주인공으로 등장하여 복수를 하며, 재생담이 있다는 점에서 차이가 있다. 전기소설의 귀신들이 남성주인공의 욕망과 관련하여 등장하였다면, 계모형 소설의 귀신은 주인공으로 등장하여 자신의 욕망에 집중한다. 계모형 소설의 귀신은 자신을 죽인 계모에게 복수를 감행하는 비윤리적인 모습을 보여주는데, 이를 통해 독자에게 재미를 준다. 그리고 악인인 계모는 처벌됨으로써 징악의 구조가 완성되며, 이 징악의 서사는 교훈성을 담보한다. 한편 재생담은 주인공의 행복한 삶을 보여주기 위해 등장하는데, 성리학적인 주체가 되었을 때 주인공은 행복하다는 것을 보여줌으로써 권선의 논리를 완성한다. 이처럼 계모형 소설의 귀신은 성리학적 질서의 일탈과 내면화를 동시에 보여준다.

Like this, the ghost of step-mother type novels shows a deviation from order of Confucius and internalization.
