꼿꼿한 남성을 격정과 혼란에 빠트린 이야기, 훼절소설은 욕정(欲情)의 문제를 의지 시험으로 구체화하고 이를 감정과 이성의 역학으로 조명한 문학 양식이다. 이에 본고에서는 인물의 감정과 이성이 어떻게 움직이고 어디로 향하는지를 살펴 훼절 양상과 서사 구조를 파악하고 인간학으로서 훼절소설의 의미를 밝혔다. 절조 있는 남성은 절묘한 얼굴과 교태로 매력을 발산하는 여성에게 끌려 의지력이 느슨해지고 자각하지 못하는 사이에 감정의 구속을 당한다. 이때 남성은 선험적 판단과 자신의 신념에 기반을 둔 이성과 새롭게 형성된 감정 사이에서 갈등하지만 결국 자신의 감정을 합리화함으로써 욕정을 따른다. 이후 여색을 멀리하고자 했던 굳은 의지는 욕정을 실현하려는 강렬한 감정의지로 전환되고 합리적 판단과 행동은 비이성화된다. 이에 더해 욕정에서 시작된 남성의 감정은 찰나적 성욕에서 벗어나 진정성 있는 감정으로 발전한다. 이로써 공모자로부터 추동된 욕정은 존재회복을 위한 주체의 욕망이 되고, 훼절남은 호색자와 구별된다. 한편, 첩보원을 연상케 하는 여성[기녀]이 임무를 수행하는 데 필요한 거짓 감정과 이성적 전략을 활성화하는 동안 남성은 진실한 감정을 표출하고 비이성의 극단에 이른다. 같은 상황에 처한 남녀의 감정과 이성이 상반된 방향으로 흐르면서 훼절소설의 고유한 서사 구조가 만들어진다. 이성과 감정의 교차 구조는 기녀에게 속은 어리석은 남성을 초점화하고 색의 마력을 드러낸다. 또한 남성에게는 진짜 감정, 진정성을 덧입히고 여성에게는 가짜 감정, 감정의 기만을 덧씌워 남성은 바보 같은 사랑꾼이, 여성은 남성을 꾐에 빠트린 미혹자가 된다. 그런데 훼절소설에는 여색을 부정하는 것 같으면서도 어느 순간 긍정하고, 긍정하는 것 같으면서도 어느 순간 부정하는 이중적 태도가 존재한다. 군자와 풍류남자를 동시에 구현하려는 남성의 욕망이 투영된 결과이다. 즉 군자로서 여색을 절제할 줄 알면서도 풍류남자로서 여색을 즐길 수 있어야 한다는 것이다. 고소설 전반에 깔린 욕정에 대한 이중적 시선을 훼절소설에서는 감정과 이성의 역학을 통해 조명하고 공모와 유혹이라는 의지 시험으로 유쾌하게 풀어냈다.

The purpose of this article is to clarify the Hwejeol narratives has the meaning of `anthropology` and the cross structure the reason and emotion. This discussion begins with the fact that Hwejeol is linked to humanity as emotions and reason. Because the break of the will occurs based on emotion and men with a strong willpower gradually change from rational to irrational. In this article, I examined the plot and meaning of the novels by tracking how the emotions and reason of the characters move and where they are headed. A man with a strong will falls to an attactive women while he was bound by feelings and emotions without being aware it. In this process, the rational will of a man who rejected sexual desire turns into an emotional will to attract a woman`s heart and men become irrational persons whose reason do not work properly. As the will changes, the male emotions turn from sexual desire to true love. The interesting fact is that in the same experience and situation women and men have completely different emotional and rational structures. While women activate the false emotions and rational strategies needed to perform their mission to break the strong will of men, men are fallen into emotions and reach extremes of irrationality. This contradictory structure focuses on the foolish man who are deceived by women and shows the negative power of temptation. However, novels present unclear point of views about male sexual desire. It seems to affirm about it, but it is also denied, and it seems to deny, and it affirms. This is the reflection of the man`s desire to be a man of virtue and a man who enjoy with women. By the way, this works explain the willing test about a man`s sexual desire in a delightful way of deceiving and temptation, but it is based on a deep insight into humans.
