Although photography seems to be objective, it is always political. At the moment the photograph captures the object, a special point of view has been included in its image. Photograph calls the meaning of the object constantly. In the same vein, the scenery pictures of the “Mae-Il Shinbo(daily newspaper)” in 1910s have also the political nature. Because pictures in this colonial news paper checks the colonial territory that is newly occupied and manage it as the property of the empire.
Basically, the image is made in a particular narrative context. The story surrounding the image helps it compose the special meaning. This is the reason why we have to consider image and text together. Especially In the early 1910`s, producers and consumers of the media had a chance to realize this attributes of the image and text compounds. While writing or reading a newspaper, They could share the effects of the collaboration of special narratives and pictures, illustration and so on. In the end, the role of the “Mae-Il Shinbo” is to organize a colonial discourse and to educate in the media literacy of the colonial era.
