식민통치 기간 중 서구 문물과 제도의 유입으로 인해 급격한 변화를 겪은 아프리카 사회와, 서구 문화와 아프리카 전통 문화 간 충돌의 과정을 힘겹게 거친, 이 시기 아프리카인의 삶은 아프리카 현대문학의 주요 주제다. 본 연구에서는 나이지리아 치누아 아체베의 『모든 것이 산산이 부서지다』와 케냐 응구기 와 시옹오의 『사이에 흐르는 강』에 나타난 문화충돌주제를 고찰해보고자 한다. 이 두 작가는 각각 출신 종족집단인 이보와 기쿠유 공동체가 식민지 기간 중 겪은 사회 변화와 이 역사적 소용돌이 속 아프리카인들의 운명을 자신의 첫 소설 작품에서 다루고 있다. 아프리카의 전형적인 반식민주의 텍스트인 이 두 소설에서는 첫째, 식민통치 이전 아프리카 사회가 고유의 전통 문화를 통해 그 나름의 삶의 방식을 유지하고 있었음이 강조되고, 둘째, 식민통치가 아프리카 사회에 미친 영향, 즉 기존의 질서가 붕괴되고 전통 문화의 가치가 경시되는 상황이 제시되며, 셋째, 식민주의를 극복하려는 개인의 노력이 실패로 돌아가고 마는 비극적 결말이 나타난다. 아체베와 응구기는 각각 이보족과 기쿠유족의 전통 의식, 관습, 종교, 신화와 전설 등에 대한 기술을 통해 제 역할을 수행했던 아프리카의 전통 문화를 재구성함으로써 서구 문화 유입 이전 아프리카 사회의 부정적인 이미지에 대한 해체를 시도함과 동시에, 서구 문화의 유입으로 인한 사회적 갈등과 이를 극복하려는 개인의 비극적 운명을 묘사함으로써 식민주의가 아프리카 사회에 끼친 폐해를 고발하고 있다. 다른 한편으로 이 두 작품에는 이보족과 기쿠유족의 역사·문화적 배경 및 식민지 경험의 차이가 관찰되기도 한다.

The introduction of Western culture into Africa during the colonial period caused drastic socio-cultural changes in the continent. African people had to experience the cultural clash between the West and Africa. In the wake of the African independence movements of the 1950s and 1960s, African writers dealt with the theme of cultural clash in their fictional works. The objective of this study is to explore the theme of cultural clash articulated in Chinua Achebe`s Things Fall Apart and Ngugi wa Thiong`o`s The River Between. These two novels which are considered representative anti-colonial texts describe the effect of Western culture in the Ibo and the Gikuyu societies. Both of the writers strive to portray the pre-colonial African society as an organic whole by pointing out that the Ibo and Gikuyu societies had been maintained by their own institutions, religions and customs. The advent of colonialism is depicted as a disruption of the natural order of things in both of the novels. The main characters, Okonkwo and Waiyaki, attempt to rectify the disorder brought by colonialism, but their tragic ending implies the embattled situation of African traditional culture under colonialism.
