The STIRPAT model is a representative model which uses population, affluence, and technology effect as variables to explain carbon emissions. Recently, urbanization has begun to be considered in the STIRPAT model, but the direction of the effect on carbon emissions is still unclear. Therefore, in this study, estimation using a panel fixed-effect model was conducted to validate urbanization and propose the share of fossil fuel in the power generation sector as a possible explanatory variable for carbon emissions. The results showed that both urbanization and fossil fuel usage were appropriate since the changes among models were negligible. Furthermore, countries were classified by income level to investigate the role of those two variables by group. The empirical results indicated that urbanization and fossil fuel usage have the highest elasticity in the high income group and upper middle income group.
