우리 사회가 다문화 사회로 진입하면서 다양한 배경을 가진 사회 구성원들이 공존할 수 있는 사회통합 체제를 구축하는 일이 바람직한 미래사회를 준비하는 차원에서 매우 중요한 당면 과제가 되었다. 본고에서는 국어교육의 외연(外延)을 ‘다문화 배경 국어 공동체’로 확대하고, 이 안에서 새롭게 요구되는 사회통합의 도구로서의 국어교육의 역할을 탐색해 보았다. 사회통합을 위한 국어교육의 방향은 민족어 교육이 아닌 ‘다문화배경 국어 공동체’ 안에서 공용어인 국어를 가르침으로써 일반 학생뿐만 아니라 소수자 그룹 학생 모두를 위한 임파워먼트 차원의 문식성 교육이어야 함을 주장하였다. 또한 사회통합을 위한 국어교육은 다문화 문식력 함양을 목표로 하되, 이를 실천하기 위한 대안으로 비판적 교수법을 제안하였다.

As our society enters into a multicultural society, building a social integration system capable of coexisting social members with diverse backgrounds has become a very important task in preparation of a desirable future society. In this paper, I extend the outline of Korean language education to 'multicultural background Korean language community' and explore the role of Korean language education as a new social integration tool. The Korean language education for social integration is not an ethnic language education, but it teaches Korean as a common language in 'multicultural background community', and it is suggested that it should be literacy education for empowerment level for both general students and minority group students. In addition, Korean language education for social integration aimed at cultivating multicultural literacy, but suggested a critical pedagogy as an alternative to practice it.
