훈민정음의 반포에 대해서는 세종 28년설, 세종 25년설, 세종 30년설, 자세한 반포 시기를 알 수 없다는 설 등이 존재하는데, 지금의 한글날은 세종 28년설을 따르고 있다. 그러나 세종 28년의 훈민정음에 대한 기록은 ‘訓民正音成’으로서 훈민정음의 원고가 완성되었다는 것이지 훈민정음이 반포되었다는 것을 의미하지 않는다. 훈민정음의 반포에 대해서는 역사적인 기록이 존재하지 않기 때문에 그 시기를 정확하게 말하기 어렵다. 따라서 한글날에 ‘훈민정음 반포 제○○○돌’이라고 선포를 하는 것은 근거가 없는 잘못된 일이다. 그렇다면 한글날을 굳이 반포된 때인지도 확실하지 않은 세종 28년을 기준으로 기념할 이유가 없다. 한글날은 한글을 창제한 날로 기념하는 것이 타당해 보이므로 현행 한글날을 세종 25년 12월을 기준으로 하여 양력1월로 기념하는 것이 바람직해 보인다.

There have been many debates regarding the time when Hunminjeongeum was proclaimed: some say it was in the 28th year of King Sejong’s rule, others say it was during the 25th year of his rule, and others say it was during the 30th year of his rule. And there are others saying the exact time of proclamation of Hunminjeongeum cannot be identified. But the current Hangeul Day was designated following the theory of the 28th year of King Sejong’s rule. But the record about Hunminjeongeum of the 28th year of King Sejong’s rule is in ‘訓民正音成,’ which means that the manuscript of Hunminjeongeum was completed, but this does not necessarily mean that Hunminjeongeum was proclaimed. There is no historical record about the proclamation of Hunminjeongeum, so it is difficult to say the exact time. Therefore, it is wrong to declare ‘○○○th anniversary of Hunminjeongeum proclamation’ on any Hangeul day. Then there is no reason to celebrate Hangeul Day according to the 28th year of King Sejong’s rule theory. Since it seems more reasonable to commemorate Hangeul day based on the day it was created, it seems more proper to commemorate it on January 1st, following the month it was created, which is lunar December of the 25th years of King Sejong’s rule.
