이 연구는 백석의 수필 「麻浦」와 「東海」의 공간 형상화 방식을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이는 현재 백석 문학에 대한 연구가 시 작품에만 치중되어 있어, 수필이나 소설 등을 포괄하는 전체성을 지니지 못하고 있다는 사실과 백석의 수필이 시적 성격을 지니고 있다는 선행 연구에 착안하여 시도되었다. 그 결과, 두 수필 모두, 글의 전체적인 전개 방식 면에서 유사함을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 두 공간에 대한 백석의 태도나 정서는 상이하게 드러난다. 「麻浦」에서 백석은 관찰자의 위치에서 근대적인 대상들과 전근대적인 대상들을 시각적으로 대비시키며, 그것들에 일정한 거리를 두어 긴장감을 조성한다. 그리고 전근대적인 대상들에 좀 더 밀착되는 서술태도로써 ‘麻浦’라는 공간을 형상화한다. 반면, 「東海」에서는 묘사 대상(공간)에게 친구처럼 직접 말을 건넴으로써, 깊은 속내의 이야기를 털어놓듯, 자연스럽게 연상되는 것들을 열거한다. 구어체의 사용과 장황한 문장, 그리고 후각, 촉각, 미각과 같은 감각의 사용은 이 수필 전체의 분위기를 이완시킨다. 다른 백석의 수필과 시들의 공간 형상화 방식을 비교하는 연구로 확장될 수 있는 가능성을 제공해줄 수 있다는 점에서 이 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있다.

This study set out to analyze the space figuration methods of Baekseok in his essays Mapo and The East Sea, after realizing the fact that current researches on his literature focused only on his poems and thus have failed to ensure the totality of encompassing his essays and novels, as well, and it was inspired by some previous studies reporting on the poetic nature of his essays. The study shows that the two essays were similar in their overall development styles, however, different in his attitudes and emotions toward the two spaces. In Mapo, he visually contrasted modern objects against pre-modern ones from an observer's position and created tension by placing certain distance between them. In Mapo, he figured the space in a descriptive attitude that is closer to pre-modern objects. In The East Sea, on the other hand, he enumerated things of natural association by speaking directly to objects (spaces) of depiction, as if they are his friends, pouring out his stories lying deep in his heart. Its overall mood is rendered relaxing by his colloquial style, lengthy sentences, and the use of senses like those of smell, touch, and taste. This study has significance in that it will provide the possibility for it to expand into a research on the comparison of space figuration methods in his other essays and poems.
