이 글은 윤동주의 시에서 부각되는 반복의 문제를 새롭게 이해해보고자 한 글이다. 윤동주의 화자는 우물로 거듭 되돌아가고, 밤마다 별을 헤며, 매일 뜯기고 다시 생기는 간(肝)의 주변을 빙빙 돌고, 내일이나 모레나 또 한 줄의 참회록을 쓴다. 이렇게 특정한 행위를 반복하는 상황은 기존 연구에서 자아의 ‘분열’에 의해 발생하는 것으로 상정되면서, ‘통합’ 혹은 ‘구원’을 향해 나아가는 가운데 끝내 지양되고 해결되어야 할 것으로서 논의되었다. 그러나 윤동주의 시에서 화자의 ‘행위’의 반복은 그가 살고 있는 이 세계의 ‘시간’이 반복의 방식으로 경험된다는 사실과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다. 따라서 그것은 동일성을 이루고 있어야 할 자아가 ‘분열’되어 발생하게 된 ‘사태’라기보다는, 매일의 삶을 살아가는 자가 그 매일을 언제나 반복되는 ‘오늘’로 감각하게 될 때에, 즉 ‘내일’ 도래할 것으로서의 ‘구원’이 영원히 지연되는 가운데 삶을 여전히 유의미한 것으로 마주하고자 취하게 되는 특정한 삶의 ‘방식’이자 ‘태도’로 읽힌다. ‘오늘’을 끊임없이 ‘반복’하는 자로서 윤동주의 화자는 특정한 행위를 거듭함으로써 ‘반복’ 속에서 ‘자기 이화(異化)’를 발생시키고, 자신의 삶과 죽음의 자리가 바로 그 ‘새로워짐’의 자리로서 구원 가능성을 되새길 장소가 될 수 있기를 기원한다. 그 간곡한 바람의 흔적을 쫓아 이 글은 ‘부끄러워하는 행위’, ‘참회하는 행위’로 구체화되는 ‘자기 이화’가 어떻게 세계 전체를 부끄러운 곳, 참회해야 할 곳으로 전환시키는가에 주목하여, ‘참회록’으로서의 윤동주의 ‘시’가 지금-여기의 세계를 새로워 질 가능성을 배태하고 있는 곳, 즉 구원 가능한 곳으로 갱신시키는 방식을 살피고자 했다. 자신을 ‘참회’의 방식으로 내어줌으로써 세계에 구원 가능성을 새겨 넣고자 하는 윤동주의 ‘쓰기’ 행위는, ‘반복’으로서의 삶 자체를 영원히 환대하는 것이자 그 삶이 언제든 새로워질 수 있다는 믿음을 끝끝내 지켜가는 것이었다. 이러한 ‘믿음’은 도일(渡日) 이후 다른 양태를 보이게 되는데, 끝으로 그 ‘전환’을 확정적으로 독서해내는 일의 불가능성을 지적함으로써 이 글은 윤동주 시 자체가 끊임없이 되살아지는 그 ‘반복’으로서의 삶과 ‘쓰기’의 문제를 집중적으로 살피고자 했다.

In Yoon Dong Ju’s poems, sense of ‘repetition’ works significantly. The subject repeats certain acts based on the idea every day is a repetition of ‘today’. While ‘tomorrow’ is considered merely as another renewed ‘today’ with no guarantee of improvement, the subject tries to find the meaning of his own acts and everyday lives in the repetitiveness of suffering and renewal itself. Under colonial modern conditions, it was crucial for Yoon Dong Ju to embrace the horizonless repetition of ‘today’ and carry the possibility of breakthrough through his literature. This study explores how Yoon Dong Ju generated his own meaning of life and death before ‘salvation’ which was ever-delayed but still believed to come, in order to greet the desperate life as it stands with hospitality. Repetition of a hopeless day and a ‘meaningless’ act was pictured in his poems as an origination of self-dissimilation where the possibility of salvation would be generated from. Moreover, repetition of writing was drawn as an act of shame to remind the world is a humiliating and sinful place, inscribing possibilities of salvation in the shamefulness of the poet himself, his writings, and the world simultaneously. Focusing on these respects of ‘life’, ‘death’ and ‘writing’, this study will read Yoon Dong Ju’s poems as a poet’s repetitive confession in wish to ‘save’ himself and the world, or a pleasing suffering of a human to endure his love for life even without power to redeem himself and the world.
