이 논문은 ‘1950년대 장편/농민/역사소설에 대한 연구’의 한 부분으로 기획되었다. 이 논문에서는 <두만강>의 서술적 특성을 분석하고 그 의미를 찾아보는 데에 목적을 두었다. 이 작업을 통하여 추후 동시대에 나타난 다른 역사농민소설들과 비교해볼 것이다. 이 논문에서는 <두만강>의 서술적 특성 세 가지를 추려보았다. 첫째 <두만강>이 이야기를 진행해가는 동안 공간 배경을 확장시켜가면서 서사의 폭을 증폭시키는 특성을 가지고 있다는 것, 둘째 시간 배경의 설정을 통해 역사적 맥락을 구체화시키려 하고, 이를 위해 특정한 사건을 먼저 선택하여 역사적 배경으로 삼고 인물과 사건을 이에 맞추어가는 방식으로 서사를 구성했다는 것, 셋째 초반에는 전통적인 전지적 시점에 의존하면서 묘사를 많이 활용하다가 진행될수록 주석적 서술이 많아지고, 후반에는 편집자적 서술이 지배하게 되는데, 이 서술 방식은 삽화, 사건들을 동일한 구조로 반복하면서 사건들의 연쇄과정을 중시하고 있다는 것 등이다. 위와 같은 특성은, 이 작품이 지닌 문학사적 배경을 고려할 때 이념 우선적일 수밖에 없는 한계상황에서 나온 것이기도 하고, 또 정치적 의도에 의해 창작이 이루어진 탓이기도 하다. 그런 점을 감안하면 <두만강>이 보여주는 민족의 자부심과 독립정신, 그리고 큰 폭의 화면에 민족의 정체성을 찾아 그리려는 의욕은 높이 평가해야 할 것이다. 반면에 삶과 환경의 면밀한 관련성, 인간들의 삶과 호흡을 이미지로 승화하는 역사소설의 궁극적 가치를 찾아보기 어려운 점은 안타깝다. 그 이유가 여럿 있겠지만, 이 논문에서 찾아본 특성에 따르자면 시간과 공간의 설정이 삶에서 유리되어 있고, 결정론적 관점이 리얼리즘을 억압해서 사건들을 통해 상상력을 펼치고 전망을 확보하기 어렵게 만든 탓이 크다고 본다.

This paper is projected as part of ‘A Study on the historical/ peasant Novels’ in 1950’s. The purpose of this study is to analyze the narrative characteristics and to explore the meanings of < Doman River >. Through this work, we will compare with other historical peasant novels in 1950’s. In this paper, we narrowed out the three main narrative characteristics of the < Doman River >. At First < Doman River > is amplified narrative by the expansion of spatial background. At second, embodies the historical context of the story with setting time background, the author begins to organize the narration after choice the particular historical events, At third, Narrator use more descriptions In the beginning of the text, use more and more more explanatory telling and editorial telling. This style narrative makes the sequence of events in the same structure, repeating episodes and events. The above characteristics are attributable to the author takes precedence over ideology, which is based on historical back ground, and is also attributable to political intentions.
