이 글에서는 매천 황현의 『매천야록』을 통해 근대전환기 국권 피탈 체험이 어떻게 인식되고 기록되었는지를 검토하였다. 굳이 『매천야록』의 글쓰기 방식을 살핀 이유는 그것이 단순한 역사서가 아니라 국권 피탈로까지 이어진 혼란과 격동의 시대를 온몸으로 부딪치며 살아간 매천의 고민과 갈등의 결집체이기 때문이다. 매천은 40세 무렵인 1894년에서 멀지 않은 시기에 『매천야록』의 집필에 착수했던 것으로 짐작된다. 이때는 동학농민전쟁과 청일전쟁이 발발하고, 갑오개혁이 이루어지는 등 조선 사회에 엄청난 충격과 변화가 한꺼번에 일어난 시기였다. 『매천야록』의 집필은 분명 지배층의 무능과 부패, 외세의 침탈이 국권 피탈로까지 이어지는 위기 상황에서 지식인으로서 매천이 선택한 저항의 수단이었다. 그런데 그것은 자기 시대의 세운과 인문을 드러내어 자기 시대에 맞는 글을 써야 한다는 매천의 문장관, 자기 시대의 총체적 삶의 모습을 남김없이 담은 책을 쓰고 싶다는 매천의 의욕, 그리고 자료를 철저히 조사, 기록하여 후세에 전하려는 매천의 기록 정신이 함께 결집되어 이룩된 것이라 할 수 있다. 『매천야록』에는 역사적 전환기에 활동한 다양한 인물들에 대한 서술을 통해 당시의 사건과 상황을 제시하기도 하고, 수많은 자료들을 인용, 혹은 정리하여 제시함으로써 독자들로 하여금 당시의 상황에 대한 올바른 판단과 인식을 하도록 하는 것은 물론 그러한 자료들이 후세에 보전될 수 있게 하기도 하고, 자기의 목소리나 다른 사람의 언급을 통해 직접적인 논평이나 해석, 비판을 가하기도 하는 등의 글쓰기 방식이 활용되고 있다. 매천은 자기의 비판적 역사의식을 이러한 방식들을 통해 구체화하였던 것이다. 이 글에서는 『매천야록』의 글쓰기 방식을 간략히 정리하는 데 그쳤다. 앞으로는 매천의 비판적 역사의식이 구체화되는 방식에 대한 보다 치밀한 검토가 요청된다고 할 수 있다.

This paper aims at investigating the writing motives and methods of Maecheonyarok, the history book written by Maecheon Hwang, Hyeon in the transitional period to modern age of Korean history. Maecheon was suffering from the critical moment of the loss of national rights. So he stood against the incompetency and corruption of the ruling class, and the invasions of foreign countries through writing Maecheonyarok. On the other hand this book was the fruit of his writing conception, his desire for writing the book dealing with the whole aspects of human life, and his radical recording attitude. In Maecheonyarok he presents the events and circumstances through showing the various people's behaviors and quoting the historical materials. Occasionally he criticizes on historical events directly. His critical consciousness of history is taken shape by these writing methods. I anticipate that this study can contribute to ascertain the writing motives and methods of Maecheonyarok, and those of the other history books dealing with same experience.
