본 논문의 목적은 ‘형식주의 작문이론’이 성립된 배경과 작문교육에 미친 영향을 살펴보고, 교육적 한계와 가능성을 논의하는 것이다. 형식주의 작문이론은 전통 수사학을 중심으로, 신비평과 구조언어학이 기반이 되어 성립된 최초의 작문이론으로, 제 1~4차 교육과정기까지 독서와 작문교육에 상당한 영향력을 행사해 왔다. 형식주의 작문이론은 규범문법의 준수, 어법상의 정확성 등을 강조하였으므로, 작문교육에서도 지식의 전달과 모범 텍스트의 모방 훈련이 강조되었는데, 이런 경향을 ‘결과 중심의 작문교육’이라고 한다. 형식주의 작문이론은 작문교육의 내용을 풍부하게 하였고, ‘단계적 작문 모형’과 ‘모방’에 의한 교육 방법을 제시하였으나, 실천 과정에서 다음과 같은 부작용도 일어났다. 첫째, 쓰기 능력 중 텍스트와 관련된 일부만을 모방하도록 했다. 둘째, 지식 중심의 연역적 교육 방법을 취했다. 셋째, 학습자의 창의성이 발휘될 여지가 적어졌다. 넷째, 필자와 맥락에 대해서는 고려하지 않았다. 형식주의 작문이론은 오랫동안 비판받아왔지만, 여전히 쓰기교육에서 중요하다. 특히 작문교육에서 그동안 소홀하였던 텍스트 요소를 보강하는 데 도움이 될 것이다. 형식주의 관점을 활용하여 작문교육에서 텍스트 요소를 보강하기 위해서는, 좋은 글의 글쓰기 방식을 분석하여 작가가 어떤 기제에 의해 표현할 내용을 생성하는지 추출해내거나, 철저히 훈련시켜야 하는 기능을 선별하여 모방 훈련을 시키거나, 수사학·국문학·국어학적 지식으로부터 작문교육에 유용한 내용을 체계화할 수 있다.

This article's aims are explaining about formalism writing theory's establishing background and effects on writing education. and discussing about its' educational limits and possibilities. The formalism writing theory is based on traditional rhetoric, new criticism and structural linguistics. It had considerable influence upon reading and writing education. The formalism writing theory emphasize grammar's observance and correct expression. So writing education also emphasized correct knowledge's delivery and model text's imitation. Those writing education's tendency is called product-based approach. The formalism writing theory contribute to writing education by presenting contents, model of writing's stage, teaching method of imitation. But product-based approach in writing class resulted in ill effects like this : First, teaching method of imitation only focused on text. Second, it caused the cramming eduction. Third, it limited learner's creativity. Fourth, writer and context elements in the writing activity was excluded by focusing text elements. But it is still important in writing education. First, we can abstract good writer's writing method by analyzing model text. Second, we can train imitation by choosing essential skills. Third, we can systematize writing education's contents from rhetoric, new criticism and structural linguistics.
