대학에서 가르치는 ‘실용적 글쓰기’는 모두 가상 글쓰기이다. ‘실용적 글쓰기’ 훈련 자체가 가상 글쓰기이기 때문에 ‘실용적 글쓰기’ 교육은 교양의 중요한 의미인 공감 능력, 타자에 대한 상상력을 기르는 데도 도움이 된다. 나아가 이러한 가상 글쓰기의 궁극적 목적은, 글쓰기 과정에서 학습자 자신이 처해 보지 않은 상황을 체험해 보고 자신의 내부와 외부를 상상하고 공감하여 타자에 대한 상상력을 확장시키는 데 있다. 이 과정에서 글쓰기의 수사적 상황에 대한 이해를 통한 글쓰기 능력 신장은 물론, 교양 교육의 목적까지 달성할 수 있다. 가상 글쓰기는 이 두 가지 교육적 효과를 생산하는 글쓰기라는 점에 그 의미가 있다.

The practical writing lectured in the university, in fact, cannot but to be imaginary writing. As the training of the practical writing itself is a imaginary writing, it helps students improve the empathic abilities and imaginative powers, which are very important elements of the education of Liberal Art. The ultimate purpose of imaginary writing lies in that students would imagine the inner and outside of themselves and expand the imaginative powers for the others by supposing an wholly new situation to them. We can achieve the purpose of the education of Liberal Art as well as the extension of writing abilities through making students understand the rhetoric context in writing. So, the imaginary writing is very important in these two educational effects.
