The beginning of the 20th century, the period just before and immedi-ately following the Russian Revolution of 1917, brought with it a new renaissance in Russian literature, culture and philosophy. At the same time, however, this period was a time of social and political turmoil. N. A. Berdyaev, one of the most famous russian philosophers of the 20th century, lived in this time of catastrophe. For Berdyaev, who was once a Marxist and then became an enemy of Marxism and regime of Communism, the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917 were an important theme of his whole life as a philosopher. Berdyaev criticized that Russian revolution was hostile to freedom, personality and spirit.
